30-06 over 308

Come on!

we are all rifle loonies! we KNOW how this will go .....

you have some .308s, you WILL build the perfect rifle in .30-06 and before its completed you'll be dreaming of and planning out your .300 Win Mag and by the time you get a good load worked up for the '06, you will be collecting the components for the next build....

and this time next year you'll be posting "I've got .308, .30-06, .300WM and .300WSM, I'm planning a .25/7mm/6mm/6.5mm build what stock/action/barrel/mounts/scope/trigger should I get.... etc etc etc etc..... "

have fun! shoot good!

Hello all as title says I've been thanking about buying a Remington 700 adl in 30-06 to do my first semi custom rifle build and my question is is there really a need for a 30-06 if I already have 2 308s I do have everything but brass to load for a 30-06 but up to 175 grain bullets what can a 30-06 give me over my 308 for whitetailto elk.if I do not buy a 30-06 I will most likely try to find a 300 wm or 300 wsm. Thanks in advance
308 and 30-06 have very similar performance i have built both in similar style 26" heavy barrels 10 twist and bothe shoot sub 1/4 moa with good hand loads tailored for each gun the 308 dose shoot lighter bullets 155 and 168 better than heavyweight 178 and 208s but the 30-06 handles heavy bullets better. Now that being siad thats the results from these two guns. I have bult and shot several 300 win mags all shoot well into 1/2 moa once you find what they like to eat. I also have 2 300 rum i am curently working with. They have 32" heavy 8 twist barrels 225 ELD is getting just over 3000fps and so far 1hole groups out to 100. Have not got to streach there legs yet, but thats really only 200 fps faster than i can get from a wm with a 26" barrel.
My opinion for you would be to build a 300wm it will do everything a 308 or 06 can do and then some. As well as the fact ammo can be found almost everywhere and is affordable to buy off the shelf if needed. As for hunting I've never had any of my 300s shot more than 1" at 100 with any off the shelf ammo. So in a pinch on a hunt you could get buy.

Okay and yea I love my 308 wins and no I dont have any 7mm or 6.5 caliber I've been looking into 280ai and if I go 300 wsm it will be a savage more than Likely and yes I do reload.and I'm not stuck on a remington 700 action I'm open to any of the 700 style actions.
If your thinking 280AI then that is what I would do. Savage is my go to for ease of barrel replacement and I have never had any issue getting to shoot right out of the box. Savage also makes LRH in 280AI and there is no need to customize. It comes with all the goodies. If you don't have any issues with the belted magnum case 7mm RM would be my first choice. I bought one years ago when they first came out and still have it. It is a .25-.50 MOA gun with reloads. My pet load is 165gr bullet on top of Rel26 at 3000fps. I also use Hodgdon 4831SC with great success.

308 vs 06?

Where have I seen this before?

Lol

For elk 200, 215, 220 grain bullets in a 26", 28", 30" fast twists and long throats and LONG oal makes the 06 a 7mm mag, 280AI and 300wsm beater....

Bolt throw?

If i have a doe, buck, bull or bear in my sights all I hear and feel is the clack clack as the bolt cycles and trigger resets as I am coming out of recoil...

375 length, 06 length, 6.8 length....

Bolt throw is 100% reflex.....

HOWEVER

a 200, 215 or 220 out of an 06 ALWAYS MEANS An additional FOOT OR TWO FEET PENETRATION ON AN ELK COMPARED TO A 150 IN A 308 OR 165 IN 7MM MAG ON AN ELK!!!!

HEAVY FAST TWIST BULLETS = 50% TO 200% MORE PERMANENT WOUND CAVITY!!!!!!!

THE 7.62 IN AN M60 IS AWESOME FOR CLEARING HOUSES

BUT

A M1 GARAND STILL OUT PENETRATES THE 7.62X51 EVERY TIME!!!

A 308 WILL NEVER EQUAL AN 06 WITH 180-220 GRN BULLETS....

AN 06 HANDLOADED WITH HEAVY BULLETS IN A FAST TWIST BARREL AUTHORITATIVELY OUTSHINES 18OS IN 300 WIN MAG ON ELK....

AT LEAST THATS MY FAMILIES EXPERIENCE WITH A PAIR OF 30" BARRELED 03A3 SPORTERIZED CUSTOMS FROM ESTACADA OREGON in the 1950s with barrels from some genius in Roseburg Oregon named ACKLEY!!!!!

THOSE RIFLES ARE NOW ON THEIR 4TH GENERATION OF SHOOTERS....

STILL KILLING AFTER HUNDREDS AND HUNDREDS OF ROOSEVELT, ROCKY MOUNTAIN, WHITETAIL, BLACKTAIL, MULIES AND BEARS....

IF YOU NEED MORE THAN 308...

28NOSLER, 30SHERMAN, , 338 WIN.......

THATS A WHOLE NEW FRONTIER BEYOND!!!!

ACCURACY WITH PENETRATION TRUMP ALL!!!

I vote 300 wm. Load it light and fluffy to crazy. Safely of course. 30.06 is cool but if gong new go big. If you have a tough rifle in 30.06 that super performance powder seems interesting, but, it is a high pressure powder, that I believe was designed for 180 grain bullets in the 30.06

The question was 308 or 30-06? Short answer 308 for all the above mentioned reasons. Both cartridges are excellent choices with storied histories but neither really lends an advantage over the other especially if you hand load. I have owned several 30-06s and 308s over the years and simply favor the 308. I have a guide friend in Alaska who favors the 06. Why? Because the rifles we have them in get the job done. He favors the 06 because of the extra muzzle energy. I favor the 308 because all of mine through the years have been more accurate than my 06s. At ranges inside 400 yards there is no advantage one way or the other. And most guides are not going to let you take a shot with either of them beyond about 450. They are both classics.
At present I own 2 308's and a 300WM, no 06s. If I owned a 308 I would step up to 300WM. Especially if you will be hunting elk at extended ranges.
You also stated that you were going the semi-custom route. If you choose any one of these calibers that is an excellent choice since there are a lot of great factory and custom guns out there to choose from. I like Remington actions to build on as well as Tikka. There are a lot of customization options available for both. Savage is good as well but has fewer option in a long action. Hope this helps and answered your question. In the pic are a Tikka custom 308, Savage custom 110 6.5 creedmore, Sako semi custom 300WM, Remington custom 338 RUM.

Well, a lot rides on what you intend to hunt now and in the near and distant future. If you have a 308 you love, that's great, but it is only good on a limited size of animals. If you are eventually going for the larger/largest North American game or African game, I'd throw my hat in for 300WM. I had a similar choice back in 2011 when i was headed to Canada for 300 pound white tail. I chose to get a 300WM even though I had two rifles in 7mm Rem Mag and a 30-06. It was a good choice, as I have used that rifle for everything now from African steenbok to Spanish Ibex, to kudu, eland and a dozen or more other species. The range of off the shelf ammo available is great if you don't hand load and it's available everywhere. Many African outfitters specify 30 caliber to hunt with, and scoff at 308 as not having enough "punch" and 30-06 has such a lofty trajectory. The 300WM can shoot easily out to 400-500 yards with a good rest and from a good quality non-custom gun. I routinely carry ammo from 150 to 200 grain ammo for my 300, depending on the animal. My favorite bullet is the old Swift A-frame. Go to their website and watch the film clip on how it works. I've had one shot kills at up to 450 yards on eland, kudu, red hartebeest, zebra and ibex. Good luck in the future!

You're gonna get some more speed from the 3006 but it'll do everything a 308 does. 308 is plenty fine for deer to elk in my experience. If you're gonna go for more speed then why not get a magnum.
