.284 Winchester?

In a 2.8" action they top out at 160's in my opinion and even that is going to be slower than most will find acceptable. The bullets start getting really long at 150 and up which uses up a lot of powder space in the case. I shoot 160 GameKings out of one of mine and with an 18" barrel it's hard to get much over 2600. That said a good cup and core bullet at 2550 kills very well, deer and elk both with mine and at this speed the GameKing performs beautifully from touching distance to 400 yards. I think the perfect 284 Win action would be about 3.1" for 150-160's, and to run 175-195 I would put it in a standard long action.

I love 284 Win and have a Tikka LA in the cartridge. But I agree in a short action its pretty limited. If you have a magnum bolt face available you've got more options (7 SAUM, 7 SST) but maybe 7mm-08 AI or 7 SAW would do the trick? If it helps, here are OALs in my 284, and all these bullets were seated with the boat tail starting just above the neck-shoulder junction, I wouldn't want to go much shorter.

Couldn't he do the short action and just have it throated for whatever bullet he intended to use so it wouldn't protrude into case to far?

I have a win 88 in 284 it's a pain to get anything over about 140gr to mag feed. 140gr TSX seated to 2.800" hit 2950 and shoot well. I wouldn't build one on a short action for long bullets unless it's a single shot
What powder are you using? Is your M88 a rifle or a carbine? That is great speed for a bullet that long in a mag fed M88!
