Anyone using the 284 Winchester for hunting, Im having one of my 280AI thats been collecting dust rechambered to 284 Winchester, I picked up some Peterson Brass and a set of Hornady Match Grade dies, going to try the 140gr Accubonds, 150gr Hornady CX bullets.
The JGS reamer my gunsmith will use has .150 freebore iirc.

Thanks in advance

I'm betting on it. I wanted an ultralight in 7mm and chose the 284 for a non magnum option. I'm planning to shoot the 168 Berger and it should be easily capable of 600 yard hunting lethality. The rifle should be complete next month. I'm excited to see how it compares to the 280 AI.

Sounds like a great idea! Not that I dislike the 280 AI... but the 284 is an overlooked cartridge that provides great performance in a very efficient case.
I shoot 284 and my son a 280AI and love them both. The 280AI will outrun it with the same bullet due to larger case capacity of course but he shoots 160-168's around 2900+.
I shoot 150's (not copper solids) in the 284 at around 2900 out of a long action and 26" barrel.
Very accurate and easy to load and shoot.
I don't recall freebore in my chamber but its the same as my LR Bench 284 that shoots 180 Hybrids and I can seat the 162 Eld-X above the neck/shoulder junction.
I jump the heck out of 150 Ballistic Tip and they shoot great.

.150 freebore should work well with 140-160 grain conventional bullets (not sure on the long coppers as I don't have experience with them).
My freebore seems too long for the bullets I'm using... but I thought about using the ELD's at first so I chambered deeper.
For example...Nosler 150 ABLR will about fall out trying to touch with chamber measure comparator and Nosler 150 BT and Solid Base jump .120 to lands and still be above N/S junction.
I'd go a bit shorter if I'd chamber another 284 Win. for hunting.

But, then again... If I need a 180 ... She can swallow it! 😁

A 284 was my first centerfire. I shot my first mule deer and first elk with a 284. M88 carbine I still have and shoot to this day, throat doesn't look great but it still shoots as good as it ever did. 160 GameKings at a guesstimated 2600-2650 out of the carbine worked extremely well even out to 450 paces. Back when you could buy factory ammo 150 PowerPoints also killed very well. I shot more game with that M88 than I have with all my other rifles put together and I am picking up another 284 on a long action today! To really use a 284 to it's potential it is a 140 BT or 150 FB max in short action and magazine fed, in a long action and throated appropriately it really shines. 180's at 2850ish using 55ish grains of powder and magazine fed is impressive.

Funny you talk about the Winchester 88, yesterday a retired co-worker called and wants me to have his model 88 284……I was like hell yeh

I have a 284 barrel all ready to go, just haven't shot it yet. Think I'll try a light hammer around 120 grains. 140-150 gr should run really good. Mines a short action so I need to stay with lighter bullets.

One of my favorites. High performance short action round. Mine is a lightweight 700 Ti
CEB 130 gr .466" at 3260 mv

With 160 Partition, I get pressure signs at 2850

I love 88s for hunting. Had a pristine 284 that shot really well. Some A- hole broke into my truck and stole it along with a winchester m70 7mag in a 2 gun case. Happened over 20 years ago. Neither rifle has ever been recovered. 😡

WOW, I assume you know what ANY M88 in 284 is worth? That is a major score!

The Savage 99 guys go crazy for the 284 also, it's the one missing from almost every collection. My dad has one, a 99F, very rare.
