.280 ai ballistics

Had 3050 with RL25 and 160 accubonds but was a little hot. Accuracy was better with 7828 @ 2950. Still working up loads for this rifle. Getting good accuracy with 168 bergers as well as 168 lrx. Have not chronographed these loads yet.

Rifle is Savage 110 with 27" Bartlein.

I get 2880 FPS out my my Cooper with a 24 inch barrel. 168 Berger classic hunter, Fed 210, H4831 SC.

What are some real world velocitys that people are getting with a .280 ai with 160 to 180 grain bullets?
I love the .280 AI, and think it is an awesome caliber. But I would stick with 168's for it. If you are wanting to step up to 180's, I would jump to the 7mm RemMag, honestly. I also love the 7mm RemMag, and have been hunting with one for over 12 years now. Both are great calibers, but I think if you want to go above a 168, the 7mm RemMag will be a better option.

My deer hunting load for my 7mm RemMag uses Berger 168 VLD's, and it literally knocks deer on their a**. Shot 2 deer in the 2013/2014 season, 1 flopped and never moved, the other ran 15 yards and dropped like a sack of taters. The 7RM's velocities with the 168 VLD just hammer deer. The .280 AI will be between 100-150 fps slower than the 7RM (with the same weight bullet), so they will both work great, but if you're wanting that extra "oomph", go for the 7RM.

280AI used Lilja barrel @ 27" on Rem action. 56gr/R-17 with 160gr AB @3046fps also worked up another load same bullet 59.5gr/IMR7828 @ 3038fps. I have shot some 168gr/180gr Berger VLD didn't chronograph any and soon as I can get some 168gr ABLR and if those shoot good may switch over.

Got another 280AI with Kreiger barrel and been shooting pretty nice with the Nosler 150gr LR bullet and haven't done any chronograph.

i was just going to post this. today 58.5 gr 4831sc fed 215 168 ablr 2970 fps cooper m52 24 inch barrel i was amazed!!!! what's wierd is the 140's shot just at 3000 . i will chrono again . ? would there be that much difference between fed 210 and fed 215

Seems fast. But maybe. You are 100 fps faster than my load with 58.5 gr 4831sc, Berger 168, and Fed 210. Maybe the primer is making the difference.

It seams fast to me as well. I use fed 215's, 60 grains of H4831SC, 168 Berger hybrid & Rem brass out of a 26" tube at 2900 and it's a pretty hot load. I would shoot it out 600 yards and see if it's accurate.

I have shot my load out to 700 yds. With my velocity at 2880 fps it is spot on.
