Please don't immediately ignore this thread, as there has been plenty of posts about the 28 nosler. I've tried searching this site, as well as several others, and can't seem to find quite what I'm looking for. If I missed something, I apologize, and please point me in the right direction if you can.... Here's the question: For those of you that have direct experience with the 28 nosler (or similar 7stw, 7-300, etc), what are your REAL WORLD experiences with barrel life? I'm going to re-barrel a 7 mag here pretty quick, and want to drive the new 180 gr ELD-M 3000 fps, and I'm thinking the 28 is going to be a safe bet and probably on the light side with a 24" barrel. I don't shoot strings, when shooting paper or steel. I wait 5-15 minutes between shots depending on conditions.... Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'll be patiently waiting for all the guy's getting 3000 fps with a 180 in 28 Nosler in a 24" bbl , they're the same guys who get 3250 with 140's in a 24" 6.5x284 .

Interested to see where this thread goes. I'm in the process of building a 28 and have owned a 7STW for several years. I have no clue why I'm building a 28 as the STW is very long throated and pushes the big Bergers very well. I've ran the STW fairly hot with 140s but tend to keep it calmed down with the 195s. As for barrel life on the STW I have around 500 rounds down the pipe and it looks as hood as the first day and still shoots as good.
I think it all depends on how good you are to your barrel in terms of heat, hot loads, cleaning and maybe jump.

Seems pretty obtainable to me, I'm getting just over 3100 fps with the 180 eld m in my 28 nosler with a 26" barrel. And that's with a slower powder and not pushing it hard.
I don't think I would want a barrel under 25" though.
Might make more sense to go with a 7-300 if using a barrel that short

Every 26 inch barreled 28 runs a 195 over 3100, 180's run a touch faster and your not magically going to loose 100+ fps over 2 inches. Not even a question if you have ever loaded for one!!

Back to the real question, the 7-300 in a 24 inch barrel will be a little under 3000 fps but I've pulled of 2000 round barrels, the 28 and STW will be less, I have pulled STW barrels in the 800 round range but I think the 1200 round range would be more like it.
I have borescoped both the 7-300 and 28 at 200 rounds of not the kindest shooting and the 28 was clearly more fire cracked.

No screws ups that I'm aware of, tried several powders and seating depths, ran into high pressure around 3025 regardless of my efforts.
My 25" 7WSM washing pushing 180 Berger VLDs 2980 validated with drops. My 28" 7-300 pushes 180 Berger hybrids 3165 validated with drops. You should have zero problem getting over 3000. I sent my 1st 7-300 barrel to Bartlein to have it inspected at around 400 rounds. They said it was probably at around half its usable life. Most guys I have talked to say the big 7mms die around 800-1000 rounds. My new barrels are nitrided. Joel Kendricks of Parker Truetec(salt bath nitriding) said his 7SAUM barrels used to die around 800 rounds. His latest barrel that is nitrided was at 2200 rounds and still shooting less than .5 moa at 1k.

Prolly a stupid question and I will ask Proof. Can a Proof carbon barrel be nitrited without messing it up. Seem might be a good idea for my current 28 Nosler build.
