270 AI equals 280AI?

With this renewed interest in the .277 caliber (27 Nosler, 6.8 Western) along with modern powders, how is the 270AI not more popular or even the equal to the 280AI?
I originally was going to build .280 AI but everybody in their brother has one. So, I went with .270 AI and very pleased with it. My current accuracy load propels the 175 Matrix at 2993 FPS with H4831SC. Others are claiming ~100+ with RL26. As .270 AI, I am OK with it as-is. There us only a handful of us here in LRH.

@Roughrice is correct. There's more options for 7mm bullets and there's factory formed brass and factory non custom dies for 280 Ackley. Both are great cartridges and are equals to one another ballistically, when loaded correctly. However, there's just more data, components, and dies for the 280 AI so that's why it's more common.

It all begins and ends with bullets.
Even cal bullets(22,24,26,28,30) are broad in range, odd cals(19,25,27) limited.
There is more bullet selection in .28 Cal vs. .27 Cal at this time because the demand is it's young stage. Even when bullet selection is equal, I will never use all if the choices available for me. For instance, my .270 Al is primarily built to propel the 165/175/Matrix and 170 Bergers.
I think I'm going to have my smith team my 270 out to AI. I've a couple hundred pieces of brand new Petersen 270 brass.
I don't have the twist rate to push the heavies with this barrel but my next one will be a fast twist.

Love my 270AI

Right there is the difference. Enough twist to use the full range of quality bullets.
I'm gonna try and burn this barrel up flinging 145gr ELDXs at 3300+ with the AI chamber for now. Every AI I've had in the past really seemed to prefer getting pushed at max velocity for best accuracy. Hopefully the 270 has similar preferences ;)

An outstanding LRH member shared this with me, a .270 AI owner, and another outstanding LRH member who owns a .280 AI.

Here's the .280 AI's comment ...

"Wow. From a .270WIN!
Pretty sure I would rather build him a .270AI though. Same speeds at less pressure. I know my .280AI is about 1.5gr off max, I had 3040 before I hit pressure, and that was with a barrel with only 50ish rounds down it".

That's what I did. Nothing wrong with sending 130's and 140's and probably 150's out of the AI.
The 27 calibers get knocked around for their bullet selection but there are a lot of great hunting bullets made for the caliber.

RL26 has been gamechanger in the .270 Win for me such I am waiting on 1:8 barrel. Berger 170 is 3050 out of 1:10 24" barrel. I am betting 3150 or more out of 27" 1:8. I am betting the 156HH will be screamer.
Just curious what your load is. That seems to be hailing *** for a standard 270 Win in a 24" barrel! I wonder how much speed you'd pick up with an AI chamber…
Also, what's your elevation that you're able to push the 170s in a 10" twist barrel?
