I have first time custom 280AI 26" barrel with 1 in 9 twist. Will be mainly looking at 140s. Others 150, 160, 168. I know that is a wide range. I've been using IMR 4350 on my 25 06 and 7 08 and plan on putting this in the mix for some load development. Main interest is hunting deer now and possibly elk later. Also, most shots on deer would be around 400. Anything beyond that would be targets just to see what I could accomplish. Looking for suggestions on a couple of powders to experiment with. I will working up some loads for a couple of factory 270's using 130s for deer. Would like suome suggested powders here on the 270, too. From some posts I've read the H4831 is a possibility. Thanks in advance...

IMR 7828 SSC. Might seem like it would be too slow, but it works awesome for my .25-06 AI and .30-06 AI. Give it a try.

I also recommend the Berger 168's for the .280 AI.

I picked up a lb of Rl 26 for testing my 270. I got a 140 accubond to 3170fps and I still haven't pressured out. I'm also looking at Rl16 for my 130 load. I've shot the same lot of H4831 for close to 21 yrs for my 130 load. I have about 4# left out of 50 I got from the shop I use to work for.
Rl 16 book is over 3200fps for less than 60 grn. I have not used/bought any yet however I'm looking at this for my 70-75grn 243 loads also so we'll see soon enough

H4831 or the SC version and the 270 Win. go together like ice cream with apple pie. Work up to it but THE LOAD used to be right on the Hodgdon bottle. 60 grs with a 130 gr bullet. I have shot this load for many years with 130 Sierra and Ballistic Tips and it runs around 3150 fps out of a 24" barrel and is bug hole accurate and usually drops deer in their tracks.

H4831sc worked great for my 270 win (before I made it a 280ai). RL22 also did well. Both those powders were used with 130 and 140 grain bullets.

For the 280ai, I'd still look at those same powders for the 140 grain bullets (I load 168 grain bullets though). For the heavier (>160 grain) I'd look at IMR7828ssc and RL26. My load uses RL26.

Yep, 270AI and H4831sc.

I use Federal large rifle in my 25-06 AI and my 280 AI. Works good in both rifles.

I don't think you will be able to beat RL26 with the heavy bullets in either. Top velocity, low es, and good temp stability.....Rich
