What should I go with. It will also have a muzzle break. It will have slightly smaller contour as the Remington sendero. So weight will not be an issue.

Just trying to squeeze some velocity out of it. Thanks

I have a 28" and a 30", the velocity difference is about 100fps with slow powder, like Retunmbo and RE25, not so much with H1000.
If I was limited to 28" as maximum, then that's what I would choose.

Cheers.

Will this gun still be manageable to carry?

Ditto on what Wildcater said. My .270 AI has 30" Lilja barrel ...

A fast 26" will beat a slow 28" barrel any day of the week. My Sendero 7stw (26") was shooting my pet 140grain ab load to 3400 fps even. My new 27" shilen is at 3340 fps with ammo from the same box. Same accuracy but 60 fps less.
My 24" 7stw fell off the wagon with this load and only did about 3200 fps, but would wake up with rl26 to over 3400 fps with normal pressures.

As others have stated, a 1" longer barrel should give you a 20-30 fps boost, but do not expect it every time.

What happens if he gets a fast 28" barrel!?

hell will freeze over...

We had that happen once with a Ruger #1 ss in 300win... The rifle (my Brother's) was doing nearly 300rum ballistics with 200grain pills. We were using it for long range prairie dog hunting. I believe he only took one edible critter with it before something else caught his eye and the rifle went to rifle heaven though.
