Anyone have any experience with the 25-06 AI? Let me know the good and bad if you do.

Yeah, I have one that I had custom built. I recommend a 26" heavy barrel. It's a really fun round, no recoil, and a lazer beam out to 500 yards. But if you don't like sizing-down, trimming, & fire-forming .270 Win brass, then I wouldn't mess with it. I enjoy it because it occupies my time, and gives me a sense of accomplishment from creating my own cases.

Here's a few pics of the rifle and comparing .25-06 AI cases up against regular .25-06 cases.

Can you not start with 25-06 brass?

I do. Just finished fire forming about 60 brass. I agree on going with at least a 26" barrel. I have only shot SST and Bergers in mine. Accuracy is good and try playing with some of the slower burning powders if you are going to shoot the 115 gr bullets. I got crazy velocity with 7828 but found it very inconsistent. Right now I am shooting H-1000 with good results. Drives a 115 berger at 3350 with 11 ES.

You can, but they will get about .0200" shorter when the walls and shoulder get blown-out during fire-forming.

I have measured some new .25-06 brass to those that I've fire-formed for .25-06 AI, and . You can even see in the picture I posted how the .25-06 brass shrinks just a little bit (about .0200").

So, from now on, I just use old range-pickup .270 brass, since I don't own a .270.

Might I get your load data for the H1000 with the 115 Bergers? I've been having good luck with the 7828 SSC, until I recently had an incident with a primer disentigrating upon ignition. The gun is at the smith right now getting magnafluxed to make sure the bolt, chamber, and everything is ok. It left a 85% visible headstamp imprint on the bolt face. I have never seen anything like it.

I was working up final ladder-testing from 60.0 to 60.5 in .1gr incriments and had just shot up to 60.5 the weekend before and everything was fine. Shot the 60.1gr string, and it was all good (no pressure signs), then got to the very first round in the 60.2gr load and the primer disentigrated and it left a horrific imprint on the headstamp. So that kind of scared me a little.

What was your max load (starting pressure signs) with 7828 and 115 Bergers?

I personally think my incident was caused by a faulty primer or my Chargemaster went nuts and overcharged a load... Either way it still bothers me because I am very OCD when I load ammo as to get the load weighing dead on, even down to the .1gr.

I am loading 61.5 gr of H1000 with Federal 210's, 115 Berger Target 15 Thou off the lands. Last three shot group was one ragged hole at 100 yds. Muzzle velocity was 3361,3350,3358 fps. I think I seen your post on Long Range Only. That is a little scary, and quite the impression it left on the bolt face. I worked up to 61 gr of 7828. All was fine with no pressure signs. I had always left my loaded rounds sitting on the bench before shooting them. After forgetting my bullets in my pocket one time I was instantly over pressure and the MV was scary fast. One reading was 3500 plus and another one right at 3600 fps!!! So now a little experimenting with 7828 and keeping my loads warm. I was showing no pressure at 61 gr if the rounds were cold. If the rounds were kept warm I was still over pressure at 58.5 gr. My gun would almost always group 2 shots good and a flier when the pressure would spike. I was not getting good ES with 7828 either. Switched to H1000 and also kept the bullets warm and it is much more consistent, groups are better and shows no pressure in my gun. I did like the speeds I got from 7828 but it is to inconsistent for the temp swings I shoot at here in southern Manitoba. My temperatures can vary by 30-40 degrees if I am shooting in September vs January.

Good info. Thanks! Yeah, that was my post over there on LRO. I'll look into loading up with H1000.

Have you experiemented with Reloder 19 or Reloder 22 any? I have tons of that stuff, but am very low on H1000. Also have you ever tried any Varget? It's a VERY consistant powder.

I was shooting R22, but was not happy with the speeds I was getting. I don't remember how many grains of R22 I was at; but was only getting around 3115 fps with the 115 Berger. And that was MAX in my gun and showed slight extractor marks. I have never tried R19 or Varget. So just by going to H1000 I gained just over 230 fps. I never totally trust the chronograph but have not been able to shoot drops at my range out to 900 yds. It has just been way to cold and windy. I got lucky when I tried the H1000 as I also shoot that in my 300 RUM and have 9 lbs on hand. If you try the H1000 let me know how it works in your gun. Another guy I know uses R25 with great results.

Yeah, I can't find any RL25 right now. That stuff is about as scarce as H1000 & Varget.

I have been debating on buying an 8lb'er or Norma MRP powder, which is an overbore magnum powder, and what I have heard rumor as they load in the factory Weatherby .257/270/7mm & 300 Wby loads. Not sure if that's true or not, but that's what I heard.

Sako AV 1-10 twist Maddco SS 25 inch , i use 270 win cases fire formed with pistol powder/cotton wool then trim to length and neck turn. Shoots 117gr GK with retumbo standard cci lr primer 3 shots 0.078 inch group. The 3 shot group to the right is from my 30-06DSCF0065 - Copy.JPG
