7prc > 7rm ??

Just bought a Savage ultralite in 7mmprc 22"bbl. Hornady 175 gt eldx. factory ammo velocity was 2699-2770fos. That's terrible inconsistencies in muzzle velocity not to mention no where near 3000fps. Federal premium with Hornady 175 gr.eldx factory ammo average was 2980 fps with only a 11 fps variation. Hornady should be ashamed! Groups were 3/4" with Hornady, 3/16" with Federal. What is Hornady's problem?

As far as I can tell their brass can't handle the pressure. It's aweful, I was blowing primer pockets out in 2 firings.

Yep, not as advertised. Barrel is a 24" Proof CF. Pic of velocity was through a new barrel. It sped up to 2889 after 100 rounds, but it's still slow. Accuracy was 3/4" @ 100. I can load for it and will be doing so soon. I'd be ****ed if I couldn't load. Marketing burnt a lot of people I bet. I'll be pushing Berger 175s. I have R26, H1000, IMR7828 to try.
I did a ladder with 175 elites and h1000.. with fed 215s.. upper end is 71-72at 3100 .. lastbone I did was a 24inch barrel and shot 175s at 3088

I would do a 7 LRM or 28 Nosler build before a 7 PRC. It may be difficult to get brass but not impossible. As I said in the SAUM thread, the 7 PRC is bunch of hype from Hornady. They should have done the full diameter of the 404 Jeffery case (WSM diameter) instead of using the 300 RCM case, keep the 30 degree shoulder or bump to 35 degree, keep the same COL and they likely would have nailed it. Basically the 28 Nosler with a slightly shorter case.

Only advantage, theoretically, is the 8" twist standard on factory rifles.
I watched Whoteewho shoot his, and the lacklustre velocity of the factory ammo was a huge negative for me. As I said in another thread, 2800fps, and that is NOT what the Hornady match ammo with a 175g ELD-X was doing, the box said that, but it was 26xx something. Is a huge turnoff for me. I'll stick with the 7-08 on the slow accurate end, and the STW for top end speed.

Cheers.
MM,
I do not have any experience with the STW's but is there any reason you prefer STW over The RUM cartridges?

Hornady can sell ice to an Eskimo

I have never found factory ammo that lived up to the numbers on the box, but 200 FPS thats a lot fake news!
I bought several boxes of 7RM federal Terminal Ascent 155gr to try.
The box said 3000FPS I got 2949 FPS ,so 50 FPS which I expected
My reloads with RL 26 67.3gr 3087-3104 at 67.7 got heavy bolt lift.

Many of us like to try different things. However, some of us have accumulated a decent supply of a particular caliber of bullets, and just want to use this supply in our testing and hunting. There is nothing wrong with the 7PRC, but there is nothing really special about it either. Hornady is a company that exceeds all others in the industry in marketing. I applaud them for their business acumen. I pick a chambering based on the hope of meeting a perceived need/desire. If I want pure speed, I would go with a 28 Nosler or a wildcat. If I want an efficient cartridge that will meet my 3000 fps target velocity, I'll go with a 280AI or 7SAUM. If I was smart and thought about the economics of shooting, I would stick with the 7RM and use the mountain of brass I've accumulated for this cartridge. I'm obviously not smart economically and continue to try different things.

And this is what the 7mm PRC was designed for, shooting long heavy bullets, not standard bullets developed for the 7mm REM MAG. But it is not only the faster twist rate it is also that it will seat heavy bullets with long skinny noses without encroaching into the powder column as much as the 7mm REM MAG does, while also fitting in the mag box.

Fake news?

I've shot like 5 7prcs ranging from 20inch barrels to 26.. average velocity on factory 175s with a 20inch barrel was 2830..
24 inch barrel was 2866
26inch barrel was 2890-2910 depending on the lot number of the loaded ammo.

The differences are in the factory offerings. 7RM rifles and ammo are constrained to older twist rates and lighter bullet weights. The 7 PRC offers higher twist rates plus it is throated for heavy for caliber bullets which equals better BC and long distance shootability in a factory rifle with factory ammo for broader spectrum of shooters (all about sales). Any custom 7RM and hand loaded appropriately could accomplish the same thing. The 7RM and 7PRC are basically ballistic twins when custom built; just pick one and enjoy. I have one of each, because I'm kind of a gun whore. 😂

Nothing wrong with being one lol
