Which 6.5 Flavor?

@Lonewolf74 You could also consider a switch barrel setup. If you run something like the Origin action you could easily switch back and forth between the .308 bolt head and creedmoor barrel, and a mag bolt head with 6.5 SS barrel. Best of both worlds. Throw in a WTO switch lug and make the swaps even easier. Or build the whole thing on a Terminus Zeus action and it gets even easier, though would cost a bit more upfront to buy the second bolt.

Don't think you would ever get to 2900MV in a creed or 47 with 156g bullets with out being way over pressure. You will need to step up to the 6.5SS, SAUM in a short action, it you want the 156 to shoot in a 6.5PRC you will need to go with Mid action.
My mid action is on a Lone Peak Fusion and I stuck with the Mag bolt face and have 6.5PRC barrel to cover whitetails and 300 WSM for ELK. With the Mid actions you can load heavies in the 300WSM as well, just had my smith cut some over bore for 215 Berger's. Everything loads fine right at the lands through trap door bottom metal.
You can download the PRC for your lower velocity rounds and juice them up for your heavy loads.

I got 2950 with a creed using the 156. But the primer pocket was blown out after the first shot. Most standard face short actions won't push the 156 past 2800, I push the 156 to 2830 out of my kelbly koda rifle. Which has a 26 inch barrel and a stiff load of RL26, you will need a magnum in a short action or go to a longer action.

Beats most others out there
Build it on a long action it just happens to be my favorite

Rick, thank you for your experience. That is something I didn't even think about...I've spent all my time with my rifles so far at the upper end that I never even thought about Not being able to find accuracy at the lower levels.

I do believe what would probably be the best approach is to build two identical rifles in 6.5 with one in 6.5X47 and one with a lot more capacity. However my funds and mostly my wife wouldn't let that happen!

So I guess that leads to another question to ponder. Has anyone tried running real mild loads in any of these cartridges and still found great accuracy?

If having to choose one or the other I would go the route of the smaller cartridge like 6.5 creed or 6.5X47 because the rifle will mainly be used for shooting fun, practice maybe a comp or two and for some deer hunting.
6.5X47 is where I am at for my general shooting and practicing round. It is also great on deer size animals too. Again, good luck on your journey

I would recommend 6.5creedmoor. Brass is cheap and available, even during these times. My eldm 147's are running 2,750fps out of my 26" barrel. I think thats good enough for deer out to 700ish yards. If you need to shoot further, or shoot bigger game than deer I would step up to a 7mm. The 6.5 magnums fill a gap that I don't need filled. Just my opinion.

Thank you all for all the opinions and feedback.

Lots to consider!

First I knew 2900 fps + was not reasonable for a creed or 6.5x47 with the 156 EOL but if it can push the 156 to 2750-2800 I think that would be more then adequate. After thinking about it and being realistic with myself if there was any task at hand that I questioned the 6.5 being inadequate I would just step up to my 300 win mag or 338 Norma. So there's really no need for me to have any "magnum" 6.5 performance anyway.

I do have plenty of respect for the 6.5x284 and appreciate that recommendation too. The only reason I did not really consider it to begin with is knowing I would need a long action to accommodate the long heavy for class bullets.

I think ultimately my choice is going to be between the 6.5 creedmore and 6.5x47...6.5x47 has a slight edge just for the fact that I like to be a little different then the masses!

After re-reading the OP, it seems to me the 6.5PRC would be perfect. You don't have to run a reduced load for what you want to achieve with the lighter bullets, that can be done through powder selection. One other option to consider would be the 260ai. All the brass options (Lapua is available at MW right now) and a little different than what the masses are running right now. Good luck.

If you narrowed it down to just those two I prefer the 6.5 x 47 mainly because of being different and not having a man bun

I also really like the 6.5x47. But I don't think it will get you the velocity you're looking for. I shoot 130 Berger's out of mine at 2950 FPS for practice. For hunting I use another 6.5x47 with 124 HH at 2938 FPS. In my opinion the x47 is better suited to 130-140 gr Bullets. With my preference being 130's. For the velocity goals you want I feel the x47 and creed are to small.
