She got it done this past weekend. It was her first deer. She still had in her hair die from the schools homecoming events, shorts because it was too warm, and cowboy boots.

Shortly after 7am on Saturday morning this doe came out of the woods and stopped broadside at 20 yards. She was doing everything she could to calm herself down. She didn't want to make the same mistakes she made when she missed the turkey the weekend before. She got her breathing under control, took careful aim, and took the shot.

The deer only went about 50 yards. We found it within minutes and it was a quick ethical kill. Just a perfect experience.

The bolt entered right behind the front shoulder and exited the opposite side, just in front of rear leg.

She was more than excited to get her first deer at 10 years old. It was a great experience for her and for me.

Now she can't wait to get out in the woods for rifle season. She is trying to convince mom that she should get a full head mount if she gets a buck. I said sure but I don't think we have her on board yet. After we got it to the processor we had to go and celebrate with ice cream.

Not mine but a buddy shot me this pic and its worth sharing. He was easing in on a herd of elk, cow calling , when he heard something coming in behind him. He came to full draw and this dude stepped out. (You'd have to know the personality) he says to himself, "what the hell, why not?" And lets arrow fly....

I would like to share my favorite hunt to date. There was no great adventure like many other hunts, just an LOP on property that I have hunted before. What made it special was getting to guide my wife to her first deer ever. Having the boys there was a bonus too. I don't know which part was harder, keeping the boys quiet enough for her to get a good shot or getting them to all smile at the same time. Everyone got to help in the drag out and cleaning. Memories made.

This year was a special year for me. My son is turning 18 and drew a sheep tag. My daughter is getting into hunting a really wanted an elk. Both of these had the same priority for me. I spent many many hours with both scouting, hunting, etc. I feel so blessed both were able to come true. The emotions were the same with my daughter on a cow elk hunt as they were on my sons ram hunt. I love hunting--and love sharing it even more. Watching my son take his final animal as a "kid" and watching my daughter fill that "void" was the proudest moment(s) of my life.

I took the bull on opening evening after 26 full days of scouting over the previous 2 months.

662 yards. 7RM pushing a 180 Hybrid @ 2996mv. Bull went 50 yards and piled up.

Got my second elk ever this morning. My first cow, had gotten a spike a few years ago. About 20 minutes after sunrise up in montana a herd of ten cows and a big six point came out at 150 yards. Wish I had a bull tag instead of general. But was a little excited and pulled my first shot and missed but got back on her and punched one through both lungs. My 145 eld x from my 270 win performed very well and left almost 3 inch exit hole on the opposite side. She went maybe 50 yards and piled up.

Had a little luck this year right from the start by drawing a good area in Wyoming. Work has kept us too busy for much scouting so we just started checking out the areas we have seen big deer before. Finding four x fours was no problem but we where looking for mass. About the fifth place we checkt out we came upon a group of does. I was all about moving on when my partner says there is a NICE buck with them. I put the crosshairs on him and take finger off trigger= he does not have anywhere near the mass I'm looking for BUT he has a lot going on and with a little more encouragement the crosshairs find a couple does in the way and I rushed the shot when they cleared=MISS! Another opportunity at just over 500 yards looks like a hit but he is moving fast out of there!! We follow him around the hill and I head south figuring he followed the hillside, Tyson followed the tracks and found him across the canyon. He had laid down about the time I got there. A 1100 yard shot in those winds didn't interest me too much so Tyson stayed there and I headed for a rock that should have the distance down to under 500 yards. Upon peaking over the rock I realize I cant see where I thought he had laid down. Looking back at Tyson for direction he is have a fit and I at first cant figure out why but finally figured out the buck was back up and moving. Like a fool I grab the Geovids and see he is looking right at me @ 235 yards. I change over to the Tikka ultra lite in 30-06 shooting 168 grain Amaxes in front of IMR4831 powder and all I see is his *** and antlers. I sure was not going to take that shot with an Amax so I waited for him to change direction and fired. When I found him there was no ground shrinkage, not the mass I was looking for but he is still at the taxidermist waiting his turn ;-)

Tyson spent a few more days looking for a buck, we found this guy last weekend but passed because he lacked the mass he was looking for.

After spotting numerous bucks yesterday that where too small we went back to where we spotted the guy we passed on. He was almost in the exact same spot but somehow looked bigger so........

Antelope season lasted one day. Shot a buck in the morning, a doe (she did have an interesting horn) and fawn right before dark. Used the new CZ 527 in 6.5 Grendel with a Vortex 4-12 Diamondback Tactical shooting 100 grain Noslers. The Grendel did its job but I have to get use to its rainbow trajectory and wind unbuckability vrs the 6.5 Sweede shooting 140 grainers. Stay tuned we still got elk tags.

This trip was something I had been looking forward to for a number of years. Since moving east for medical school a few years ago, I had really missed western hunting. I was fortunate to draw a good number of tags for WY this fall and had time to head west for a 12 day hunt. I'm in the process of applying to residency and this trip couldn't have come at a better time!

This would be the first time my 6.5 Sherman would be out in the field and it performed just as I had hoped with the 140 VLD.

On the first day, this antelope was too goofy looking to pass up. One shot at 507 and he was down for the count:

Next up was the elk opener. Tagged my first bull elk and was definitely happy with him!

Finished up my hunt with a nice cow elk on my second to last night. Had to shoot across a canyon at 583 yards. Took us a while to find her in the dark, but had a blast packing meat out! Residency will likely put more of a damper on my time, but I'm hoping I can get out again next fall!

Got back from land near the Medicine Bow, west of Cheyenne. Went with Y3 outfitters. Many thanks Mo Forbes and his guys. Spotted him with 2 other bucks, had to only walk 400 yards or so for the shot. Was using my 6.5 Creedmor, 143 eld X, gave him one at 365 yards. Using a Defiance action, Proof barrel, KTM stock, And a Vortex Razor Gen II 5x27X56. Just a cool gnarly ole buck.

My 11 y/o grandson shot this coues deer this week with a 6.5-06 at 563 yards using a 142gr LR Accubond at 3050 fps with 59gr of Retumbo. Provided a picture of the wound channel opening. Exit whole just slightly larger; one shot and dropped immediately. 24" Douglas barrel/no brake on a M70 action. He kept the rifle on hold for several minutes until it came into full view but his patients paid off. One happy little guy
