Savage 111 LRH 6.5-284 Loading Questions

Hello Guys

I too have a Savage 111 in 65-284 I done a lot of testing back on January Sought advise on here back then. I could not get any satisfactory results using 4831 and Berger 140'S. I finally got a bit Frustrated and set it a side. I decided to start over and give another try. I am no expert by any means but I have loaded for rfile's 20 or more years. I recently aquired about 150 rounds of new and once fired winchester 284 brass. Before I was using Nosler 65-284 Brass. I thought i would test both. I necked down some of the 284 to use. I wanted to start fresh so I wanted to get a OAL for both the empty cases both mesure the exact same using digtal calipers to Trim lenght then using Computator to measure to sholder as well.

Here is a problem I incountered getting a chamber length to start from. I tried 3 different cases of each Winchester and Nosler. Seating the bullets long and then chambering to get a length (Method I have always used) I get 3220 using the Nosler cases and 3197 on the Win. I even tried using the same bullet in the respective cases. I also used Hornady Computator set to mesure to the ogive and still am getting .022 different in length. I own a Machine shop and know how to use Calipers. But it has me stumped I tried it over and over getting the same results. I can't figure out where the difference is coming in. Does any one have any thoughts?

i will say it is probably neck tension differences between the cases that is causing your differences. that is why i use a modified case more consistent that way.

That thought occured to me and the neck tension is more on the Nosler. But would it make that much difference? I bought a Horanady OAL Gauge It came in this week but I failed to order a case. I was gonna make one and did'nt have a 5/16-36 tap to thread with. Is there any trick to use without having to order a case form Hornady? Maybe Drill out case so it will just fit over the threads?

you can buy the tap like i did i make all of my own cases now just drill out at the primer pocket with a 9/32 drill then tap.. i think i have a wasted case i can make you one if you like.

I decided to fire a few shots of the 140 Nosler loads just to, well for no real reason, just felt like it. Threw up the gong at 475 because it was convenient. I'm hoping to let my dad use this load to take a bear in 4 weeks. I dialed the scope. First shot was dead center with zero wind. Then as I was taking aim for shot two a slight breeze picked up. I did not adjust for the wind even though I felt it pick up. It was so slight I did not think I would matter much. It ended up being 2.9" CTC. Shooter shows a 1.75 mph wind with 2.5" of deflection at that range. In zero wind I think it would have been a sub 1.5" group.

pm me your address and i will try and get one made and mailed off early next week.

Something u can do is use the expander ball only and lube the inside of the case neck. This can work and has worked for me in the past

I finally figured out my 6.5x284 lrh load data!

Nosler custom brass
cci br2
46.7g imr 4831
140g berger vld loaded .10 off the lans

Group measured .476 outside to outside and .212 point of impact I am beyond excited to finally have something shooting well in this gun!

The worse part is I bought some hornady 140 grain sst to hedge my bet for this season if the bergers wouldnt shoot now I have a bunch of extra bullets :)

Ha Ha Joe I did the same thing today I was gonna post later. I found my node with 52.7 Grains 4831 set 5 thousands off the lands. I had a 3/4 inch at 200 yards. Shot the same load Friday with a friend and had 6 or 7 hits out of 12 on a 9 x 12 inch gong at 1204 yds
