I've got a 6.5x47 lapua and want to get another barrel that has the same .473 case head diameter but boost's performance. So far I have narrowed it down to the .284 Winchester and the .280 Ackley Improved. The ackley is rted for 16% higher pressure than the .284 winchester so I am leaning that way. My question is, what would you folks choose to chamber this barrel n and why?

You don't say what kind of rifle the barrel is going to be installed on. So you have a long action or short action? The answer to that question will have a big effect on what will work.

The 284 load data is still reflecting lower pressures for the two original rifles chambered for it back in 1963, the model 88 Lever action rifle and Model 100 semi automatic.

There should be different load data for bolt action rifles. IMO the 284 Win and 280 AI can be loaded to the same pressures.

I have had several Rifles in 284 win over the years and still have one. With the longer high BC bullet offerings the 284 would make even in a long action.

My SA Ruger tang safety has a lengthened mag box of 3.1". My favorite powder for this hunting rifle is RL-17.

If you do decide to use the 284 neck up Lapua 6.5-284 cases. The quality is better than Winchester or even Norma brass.

Recently helped a friend put together a load for his Jarrett 280 AI. It shot very accurately and was easy to find the best load. Used Nosler brass.


Can't tell you which one to use. Your choice.

I have both and I don't compare. Their is two 284 thanks to the 6.5x284 Norma and OAL 3.228" on a long action and Mel Forbes build his 284 Model 20 with 3" magazine. Browning was the first to make bolt action 284 back in the late 60's and I wish I would of gotten one of them

The gain in my 284 is the long action and 27" long barrel and here is one a short action

I get 3048fp with 53gr/R-17 using 160gr AB seated out 3.150". I did drop my load down 1/2 gr and I'm using Win brass it's good brass and I do have some Lapua,Hornady,Nosler 6.5x284 case that I had for my 6.5x284 Norma rifle and I also shot Win cases in that rifle.

I had my 280AI long throated also which has some advantages and I have same barrel length as 284. For me it's nice to see the 284 where it's at today.
