7wsm vs 7 rem mag

I would like some info. on the difference between the 7wsm and the 7 rem mag other than less powder. I guess I need to know is is the 7 rem just as accurate as the 7wsm. I am building a hunting rifle with one of them and wondering if I use the berger bullet and have to use a long action would it be best to make it a 7 rem mag instead of the 7wsm

In a long action the 7WSM would have slight usable capacity advantage if throated to seat the bullet at the base of the neck. It would still be short enough to feed from the magazine. I would pick your preferred bullet and measure the oal when seated to the base of the neck and verify that will work with your magazine and then have the barrel throat cut to match.

I think the 7WSM is the best of the short mags but may not be here to stay.

If I was building a hunting rifle in 7mm it would be the 7mm stw unless there were other considerations. Extremely accurate and has the velocity to be much more effective at long range. I have five of them and a 7mm rem mag along with the wby mag. If I had to choose between the two you mentioned it would definately be the 7mm wsm. That would be for a shorter barreled light rifle that would not require a brake. Otherwise I would not consider anything but the 7mm stw. You are trying to choose between two cartridges that are virtually identical in performance. So I would pick the most efficient one which would be the wsm. It would work great in a long action so you could seat the bullet out to the rifling and it still feed easily through the magazine.

A 7 WSM with a 175 SMK or VLD will get the job done with authority out to your personal game harvesting limits.

In the 'ol saying "Theres no replacement for displacement" I dont see how the wsm can out do the rem mag? Perhaps it caries better, has a shorter bolt throw, but my limited knowledge of physics and terminal performance says the rem mag will out perform the wsm simply do to more oomph behind the same bullet.

The 7mm wsm will not outdo the 7mm rem mag. But just like the wildcats based off the 280 and 30-06 cases, the 7mm wsm is virtually the same performance as the 7mm rem mag in a more efficient case making all of those a very good choice instead of the powder guzzling 7mm rem mag. I still have one 7mm rem mag in my collection but it gets no work because my 7mm gibbs (30-06 case), 7mm jrs (280 case) and the 7mm wsm all have about the same performance as the 7mm rem mag with less powder, recoil and noise. They are all within less than 100 fps of each other and that is just not enough to matter considering the benefits of the smaller cases. When I want a magnum 7mm I go to my 7mm-300 wby or 7mm stw and step up well beyond the others for serious long range hunting. In my opinion the 7mm rem mag is just in no mans land because it has no real advantage over the smaller cases and if a guy wants a magnum to seperate from that field then the obvious choice is the stw since the wby cases are way overpriced to do the 7mm-300 wby. I understand the 7mm rem mag has been very popular for many years and I have owned several taking several animals with them. It will continue to be popular because of all the rifles chambered in it. I own and shoot about everything and have no biases so I just tell it like it is. I am sorry if I offend anyone but I tell the facts as I see them.

The 7wsm case capacity is approx 81.5 and the 7mm Rem mag is around 82.5 depending on the brass of course so the case capacities are a wash.

I think the rem mag has an additional advantage in useable capacity when both are seated to max sammi oal length especially with longer bullets. However when you put both rounds in a long action the WSM will have more useable capacity especially with the long bullets.

Just look at the difference in the 284 winchesters performance when limited to 2.8 inches OAL compared to running them in the long action at 3"+ you will see what I mean.

I assure you no offense taken at all. I just post my opinions like everybody else. Most everybody else has a different view and that doesn't bother me in the least. I appreciate very much all the different opinions on here and that is what makes it a great learning experience. Good hunting, have a safe trip when your in the field.
