I have a relatively new 300 win mag (a month old but 140rnds down the tube) and a brand new to me 300 wby imp. I was looking into heavyweight 30cal bullets and the 240gr smk with a bc of .771 really stood out. I am thinking of loading then for the 300 wby imp, and maybe also the 300 win mag after a buddy made a comment that with the powders I'm using I would barely loose any velocity going to the heavyweights.

I have H1000, Retumbo, and N170 currently available, can get RL22, RL25, VV-N570 etc as well. So any data or starting loads with The powders I have and expected velocities would be great.

If anyone has a good idea of how much titegroup (only pistol powder I have) would be right to fireform 300 wby into 300 wby imp. I would just put some rolled up toilet paper in the neck to stop powder spillage.

Thanks,
Oliver

Wish I could help but, I've never tried that combo..although I've wondered how the 240 smks would perform out of my 300 rum. Just curious what would be the intended purpose of the 240's...game/what size or paper or both? IMHO I think what you might gain in bc may be deminished by velocity loss at least in the 300wm. Be nice to know what your shooting at and how far.

i will be shooting whitetail and hogs, nothing bigger for the forseeable future. Ranges.... will see how confident i feel in my abilities and how much time i get at quantico (local 1000yrd rng). Well i definetely wont be pushing the limits of a 300 wby imp shooting a 240gr pill. If you need a number, 1200 and under.

That's what i was wondering about, well im going up 30grs in bullet weight from a 210 berger vld and gaining .8 in BC (G1).... seems like a relatively big gain for the weight.
I tried H1000 and Retumbo in my 300 win mag and got up to 83grains of retumbo into the win mag case (long throat) under a 20thou jammed 210 VLD with no pressure at all. I can get more, i now have a powder funnel with 5 1/2" drop tube, before i was using the "tornado" method :D
Heck i may just have to order some and give it a try.

You will be better suited with the 200 grain bullets in the 300 Wby or the improved version. Depending on your twist, you may be able to shoot the 240's, but you won't have enough donkeys behind them to take advantage of the BC. Which by the way is posted at .711 not .771.
Forget the toilet paper method for fire forming. Just load them as usual and shoot during load development and they will form very well.

Thanks Joel, was a typo (but a bad one) I used the balistics profile for the 240 smk that is in my program. If I can get the 210 Berger to 3200 it matches the performance of the 240 smk at 2900. Seeing how the smk's are a lot more expensive and I already shoot the VLDs from my 300 win mag, I guess I will stay with them for the time being. May get a 50ct box of the 240s at my next midway order just to see what they do.

The 240 gr smk is a great bullet. It holds the world record at 1000 yards. I remember one of the guys from PA coming to shoot the mile match at Ohio. He was shooting a 300 weatherby improved with the 240 gr smk and shot the winning 5 shot group at a mile. If I remember correctly the group was a 6.59. I dont remember what powder he was using but the 240smk did the job and they hit hard. I currently shoot the 240 smk out of my 30-338 norma and 30-338 lapua. I have taken several elk with this round and have had great results. If most of your shots are going to be 1000yds and under i would recomend you shoot a 210 burger or 208 A max. One thing to remember is that the bigger bullet you shoot the more recoil there is going to be.

Ed Kenzakoski shot that group at Thunder Valley with his .308 Baer Heavy Gun and 240 SMK's. The .308 Baer is an improved version of the 300 WBY.

I was knocking on his door when I shot a 3.806" four shot group at the same range with my .338 Big Baer.

Although the 240 is a great bullet for the extended ranges, Olivealan would be better served with the 200 grain bullets at his 1,200 limit.

1200 is just a number I gave, this is my dedicated LR gun. I can't think about shooting any big game at further than 1,200 in the forseeable future but woodchucks, coyotes and such I would like to be able to shoot at whatever range I see them.
At 1500 leaving all factors besides velocity and the bullet the same the 3200fps 210 VLD beats the mk by .1moa of wind drift (10mph cross wind) but drops 2moa more, so the 240 smk wins at 1500+. Like I said I'll just order a couple and give em a whirl.

What exactly is a .308 Baer? What I have is a 300 wby, min taper, 40degree shoulder.

What powders are used in the Baer?

308 Baer is the same thing as a 300 wby improved. It was designed by Burce Baer. He calls it the 308 Baer.

Hey Joe when are you coming back to ohio to shoot? I want to see you put all 5 in the center of the target at 3.806 not 4 in the corner .

Dont make me invite Oliveralan with his 300 weatherby improved and his 240smks to show you how its done.

I'm still getting **** about that 4 shot group.... I guess 4 in the corner at 3.806" is better than 5 in the center at 12":)

We were going to come out last weekend and shoot on Sunday, but my shooting partner couldn't get his arse in gear and get his equipment ready in time.

Do I know you?

Oliveralan~

The .308 Baer is based off the .300 WBY case with a 35* shoulder and .007/" taper. We use the .340 case as it gives a slight advantage of having a longer neck after fire forming.

Powders of choice for the cartridge are MRP, H4831, and RL22.

Joe,

Thats unbelieveable shooting especially in a 4 to 5 mph winds if i remember correctly. I know you have had a year to practices I cant wait to see what you can do this year. Anything new in the works? Any new surprises your working on or bring out this year?

I don't know if I can ever top that group, even with a year to practice. Sometimes even a blind squirrel finds a nut...

I have a new combination to test... different boolets, different twist.

Same .338-.408 Big Baer, same old nut driving it. Accuracy has been similar to the combination I shot that group with, but we'll see what happens when the rubber meets the road. It may all fall to pieces way out there..

My partner has the same combination, so it'll be another " who can kick who's arse" kind of shoot..

PM sent..
