So great job and congratulations. I think my question is not whether They'll work or not but why choose them (target bullets) over the thousand other bullets specifically designed for hunting?

I think there are several reasons. They are reasonably priced. You can use one load for both targets, practice, and hunting So they serve a dual plus purpose and cut down on the number of components you need. They have been readily available. And they do a very good and efficient, effective job at killing quickly. Particularly the Amax, Eldm, and lately the tipped match king.

Because lots of us will always push the envelope and find ways that best work for our intended purpose/personal choices. For instance, since the OP - @Ucsdryder used Hornady ELD-M over ELD-X and others, in most instances, the M works better than the X, despite how it was designed or marketed. Most of the end-users here understand the bullet structure and how it works.

This! I read an article but cannot find it anymore that the ELD-M is the improved version of the A-Max, and the ELD-X is the improved version of the ELD-X. If true, I have always preferred the A-Max's performance over the SST, at least on a deer-sized game and smaller.

I still use 168 Amax's in my AR 10 as it doesn't like eldm's. They are deadly. They do an exceptional job as distance increases as well. Every bullet has its velocity threshold for stellar performance and I think the Amax just gets better as distance increases.

I use match bullets in both my 300 win and 6.5 creed and have never had a problem. This tank of a bear a got two years ago was with a 143gr Sierra match King out of my 6.5 vanguard.

I still have 75g (.22), 100g (.26), and 178g (.30) but it has been a while since I loaded and shot them. Below was in the mid-2000s on antelope at 368Y(*) with 178g out of my .300 WM.

Very interesting thread.....I`ve always been quiet about hunting with SMK`s....been using them for years.... will continue,,,, they work.....
Years ago I read a thread about ranchers using them on elk.... I tried them and am happy with their performance.....

The fastest incapacitating bullet I ever used on whitetails was the Hornady 162gr A-Max fired from a custom 7STW.

FWIW - In an older Hornady reloading manual, it specifically recommended the 162 A-Max bullet for "HUNTING" thin skinned biggame. They were apparently ahead of their time. Berger caught on sometime later.

We're those the aluminum tipped torpedoes think the box said national match on it. I used them in my 7STW. Bought 500 of them at an NRA show in the early 90s. Consistently dropped every deer I shot out to 1440 yards. Never had one run. Tried to get Hornaday to make me more. Steve said they were experimental. Could not make them anymore. Best target bullet I ever shot.
