300 PRC question

All the guys in here saying not to use them, I assume you have experience with them on big game?

Oh you don't? Ok…

I've used the the 180 eldms with great success on elk, deer and antelope. Will be using the 225s this year. It's rare I don't get an exit the size of a baseball.

Shoot them!

This question is one that needs to be answered by people who have tried these on bigger game animals. I've killed deer out to 770 yards with them. They do very well on deer size game. I'd be very reluctant on bigger game especially those with heavier bone. Hitting a shoulder at very long range may have a much different result on a bigger animal. I shoot for ribs on deer. Large target and the bullet does a great job. IF you were shooting an Elk with them. I'd focus on the rib cage area 100% and avoid that frontal shoulder region.
Shoulder, hits lung, hart, shoulde, shoulde's!

300PRC and factory Hornady 225gr eldm ammo real world experience last year 2022. I built two guys 300prc rifles that drew trophy tags, one of the hunts was a 340" Utah early rifle bull, I was invited along and personally ranged the bull at 700 yds, first shot hit high lungs and he ran 20yds and second shot hit him center lungs while he was wobbling side to side and nocked him over dead.
Second trophy bull was 360" Az late rifle. Very cold hunt and bull was shot at 350 yds quartering toward the hunter and that 225gr pounded that bull ( one and done )

I've killed 4 elk with the 300 PRC factory loads myself and my son killed his elk last year with them; his was a 571 yard shot slightly angled back part of rib cage entry, and it tried to exit in the crease far side but didn't exit the skin. It broke through ribs on entrance and exit side both. What I have noticed is that they tend to come apart in smaller pieces than Berger's do (Berger's tend to chunk up into a bunch of small chunks, whereas the 225 ELD-M seems to almost powderize when they finally are fully expanded). I have also killed many deer, white tails and Axis deer and wild hogs with the 147 ELD-M's from 6.5 creed and 6.5 PRC and they seem to mushroom a little bit better in my experience (They don't powderize like the 225's do when full expansion is reached in an animal). However, to answer your question from a guy who has killed/seen killed 5 elk at ranges from 380 yards to 653 yards: the 225 ELD-M from 300 PRC factory ammo (muzzle velocity around 2,800 fps will work just fine for elk sized game. Just don't expect a complete pass through the far side skin is all. Mine have all penetrated both rib cages just not the far side skin and all that was leftover was mostly lead and copper powder with extremely small chunks against the far side hide.

I purchased a 300 PRC rifle. It's all set up using the Hornady 225 grain ELD match bullet. What is everyone's opinion on sticking with that load for elk and mule deer. My average shots are between 400 to 700 mostly. The rifle already has a two-stage custom dial on a huskimo scope.
oh hell no. Been there done that. Super accurate, but bullet does not penetrate. Blows up on any bone or shoulder. ELD-X much better choice. IMHO

I have hunted elk for 30 some years now. And very seldom you ever get an exit.
Always get a large exit wound with Barnes bullets on Elk. Never have had one not pass through and that is with my 338 win mag with 225 gr bullets at 2800 fps. Which is comparable

I've never shot an elk with one but the hornady factory match 225eldm has turned a few 300lb west Texas boars heart and lungs to sludge out to 900yds. I shot a 175lb boar at 115yds dead on in the forehead right between the eyes. The bullet exited in the brisket area. The postmortem inspection showed a broken spine at the 2nd vertebrae.....hog didn't even twitch.

Did the Az bull get shoulder?
