The issue is that your choice in cartridge can also be viewed as a poor choice for long range hunting. You could definitely pick a much more effective cartridge for fighting wind. Just because it doesn't make sense to throttle back a 300 to you does not negate the argument that is a valid option. My only point is that arguing a suppressor is extremely detrimental to performance has little merit. I also have a 3006. Running numbers such as a 178 eld at 2850 vs 2700, the impact at 800 yards for reduction in fps is .5 moa for 10 mph wind. There is nothing extremely detrimental about that. Additionally, if you can't get a good read on the wind then don't take the shot. I've passed on plenty of shot ops just to make things go more in my favor. I see no honor in killing for bragging rights so I'll walk away if I have to. I will totally agree with your statement that every advantage helps. That may mean moving closer, picking a better cartridge and bullet, and train more. Good luck on your matches and hunting. I am thick into predator season myself.

I am not arguing for or against a suppressor only pointing out barrel shortening is detrimental to preformance which it is also I hunt with my 30-06 because I always do and always have and I don't have the desire or need to shoot at game animals past 600 yds seems like more than half the fun is figuring out how to get close. almost all my shots are 200 or less good luck on the predator hunting those are fun to stretch the long range shooting

Hmmmm! Nuzzle Brakes, Suppressors, Silencers! Three very different things! Muzzle Brakes are to counteract recoil Muzzle Lift, and are Very Loud, especially to either side of barrel! Suppressors (Mufflers) reduce firing report (Noise) by about a third, plus help reduce felt recoil! Silencers (Super Mufflers) are meant to be used with sub-sonic ammo (under 940 fps at muzzle), so as to greatly reduce muzzle blast (by at least 2/3), eliminating Sonic Boom, and is so quiet used as designed that no ear plugs or ear cups are usually needed. Personally, I use plugs and cups at most ranges! Recently I've noticed that many ranges no longer allow use of muzzle brakes on firing line, concerned about hearing damage! In Europe suppressors are used almost everywhere, but not mandatory. I'm glad to see more concern for hearing safety! In Europe several suppressors are commonly used that look a lot like lawn mower mufflers, and sell for less that $100 US. Probably we will soon follow suite here in the US! Be safe, and take care of your hearing!!!

I'm under the understanding that brakes reduce recoil, but yes, you can tune some brakes to reduce muzzle lift. Good shooting technique will also reduce this lift. And silencers and suppressors are one in the same. They were patented as "silencer" by Maxim so that is the official name. Obviously the name was a marketing strategy. The word suppressor is interchangeable with silencer and is a better description of what they do. But they are the same thing, and not dependent on whether someone is shooting subs or supers.

I think everyone was reading into that a bit to much I wasn't meaning to force everyone to to it. I was more thinking they should come with every rifle and be encouraged to be used not what we have now. And yes in some instances I think it should be mandatory. Similar to exhaust.
I have one rule of government to keep people from infringing on others rights . Now in the area I live and most others you must have muffler on your car. Why because if you decide to drive past my house at 4 am you could be seen as infringing on me. Same as if someone 100 yards touches off a rifle at crack of dawn.
so yes it could be seen as one of the few things the government could mandate but should be a local or state level. And be more encouraged than forced.

Tell you what. When you can make a .30-06 as quiet as the typical car then talk to us about "should" and "mandatory". In the mean time guns, even with suppressors are loud.

The logic still holds. And not sure about you but I have a range right by my house I can watch tv and take a nap if someone is shooting suppressed same as I can still hear a car go by but it's not a jake brake on a semi.
Second I've clearly stated that I don't think anyone should be forced. I think it should be sold with or made easy access. But like stated it about other people's rights also. Same as hunter harassment. They technically are not doing anything to you but being loud and purposely being an a hole is and infringement on an individual.

Well, I don't know how it is in Idaho, but here in the great Lone Star State, big ol' baby boys are born holding a 30-06. The smaller boys and most of the girls are born carrying a 30-30 in their little hands. And, I do agree that sneaking up on your game is a large part of the fun.

I have a Banish 30 going thru the gubbermint approval pipeline currently. I don't hear the shot or feel the recoil while hunting. But, while working up loads or simply position shooting, wearing double hearing protection is a source of annoyance particularly in the warmer months. I, like most avid shooters, have "catastrophic hearing loss" (audiologist's words, not mine). So I no long wing it with a couple 9mm cases stuffed in my ears. We'll see how the suppressor works out.

Hardly need a suppressor for normal HUNTING situations with usually one shot kills. Range time or varmint hunting with multiple shots, silence may be golden??

I like my guns quite, my stereo loud, my Harley loud, lawnmower quiet, need the tv loud watching football, need my tires to be quiet on my car. My truck has mud tires but everyone needs to hear me coming with those. My race car needs to be loud ( it just sounds better that way). When I go see Chris Stapleton in concert, I want it to be loud. My favorite color is blue and I like chocolate Ice cream.

Over about the past ten years, I have accumulated one used Weatherby and a 1911 that doesn't fit my hand or shooting style. I have more weapons than that, but no racecars, airplanes, a gigantic place to hunt and shoot every weekend, or even that Red Rider BB gun I always wanted.
