Hammer Hunter Load Data, (See page 1, Post 8)

Got this load shooting good in my daughters 243. Here's the load:

Hornady once fired brass, 41.7 gr Varget, CCI 200's, 70gr Hammer Hunter, 2.700 COAL, 1/4 turn crimp, 3568 FPS out of 20" barrel. 1/2 MOA at 100.

I see I need to add some info to my post #347 on page #25 re: 280 AI w/ 143g HH.

Barrel length is: 27"
Brass is: Nosler, 3+ firings, full bench rest prep
Primer is: Federal 215, Blue Box
Crimp: 1/8

Does anyone have some good hunting loads for .280ai?

Mine is a 36" IBI C/f wrapped barrel. Only 100 rounds in but looking for a Hammer load to select projectiles for load development.
General hunting mostly pigs with a possibility of Deer etc once the ground work is done. Just looking to set it up and set it aside. I have other rifles and components for trigger time.

I'm in final load development for my 280 AI right now. Have an older great load with the 143 HH at 3250 fps, but I'm a velocity junkie and wanted more speed. Couldn't get the accuracy out of the 140 AH even though I had the speed, so I decided to go with the 120 HH.
Using StaBall, I'm getting over 3500 fps. Verifying velocity and groups tomorrow. Will report back once I'm done.

36" a typo? I have a 24" IBI on order now with a 1-7.5" twist for a 280AI. I plan on running the 140 AH with H100V. I'm seeing 3300 FPS plus with this combo from other guys. I'd be happy with that.

I got over 3400 fps but the accuracy wasn't there, so I switched to the 120 HH.
I'm finding the AH is great in some of my rifles and the HH is better in others. Kinda like any rifle, you find what it likes. I have an 8 twist, so your 7.5 may work better with the AH than what I got. Give it a run and let us know how it works. I'm finding the AH works better with a faster twist than what it's listed minimum twist rate is.

Gunsmith was seeing good things from the IBI barrels he fitted an the prices are good.

I got a 26" IBI C/F wrapped .

Correction, TWIST is 1 in 8.5 , yes 8.5


I think the available choices from retailer were only 22 or 26" only one twist rate per calibre

Anyway, it's my only custom/project and built on a shop soiled (stock scratched) Tikka with a C/F stock .

Its shooting ok with 100 down the tube but I want one set and forget load and want to test Hammers.

I don't think I have achieved 3200 so I would think that's ok with 140s if they shoot.

Of course I have Aussie ADI powders. There are some Hogdon equivalent s.

I expect 140 hammers would be likened to a slightly heavier BT or soft point. .

Honestly I have not had complaints on other Projectiles , but interested in testing Hammers

If I travel somewhere to Hunt something I just want full confidence that I have good ammo.. it's the cheapest part of the hunt.

Somewhere in there I found an explanation of Absolute Hammers by Steve.

Now I have my head around this that the ogive is marginally smaller diameter than the bore with a slight concave ring around the diameter behind the Ogive before meeting the bullet diameter of the shank this produces less drag resulting in higher velocities than similar weighted Hammer Hunter projectiles and others .

Of all the stuff I have read, all of the questions I have asked I didn't really find anything showing or describing the difference in the Hammer types or the reason they perform so differently in the same weight.

I think I'm getting the gist of it now.

Now to connect with our Aussie contact and import some to the mainland..

Finally got to the range today to try Hammer Hunters for the first time.

Custom 300 PRC with 26" Bartlein 5R, CF, 9 twist, Sendero Contour.

Bullets: 199 Hammer Hunter
Case: Lapua
Primer: CCI 250
Powder: N565 (started at 79.0 grains)
Seating Depth: .020 Jump

79.0 grains 2995 FPS
79.5 grains 3050 FPS (not sure why this was so fast)
80.0 grains 3037 FPS (bolt getting sticky)
80.5 grains 3070 FPS (heavier bolt lift)
81.0 grains 3102 FPS (even heavier bolt lift)

Plan to dump the rest of what I loaded and go back to 79-79.5 grains. All shots were at 100 yards, same POA. Impressive how tight the group is with a 2.0 grain spread! The "flyer" was the weird second shot at 79.5 grains. Even with it counted, the group was right at an inch.
