Looking for real world results and velocities from a 300 Rum shooting Berger 215s and 245s. I'm on the fence about which bullet to shoot with the new 26" 1:9 barrel. Will be used for long range hunting. I'm not sure if I can push the 245 fast enough to gain anything from the higher BC.
If anyone has used both I'd like to know what your results were. Thanks

Thunder, Maybe not much help, but thought I would try. I am loading the same bullet myself. I also have a 26' barrel with a 1/9 twist. I hope to make it to the range in the next week or so. I will let you know what it does. I can tell you i ran the 230 OTM's at around 2950 and still had plenty of room to go.

Another thing. I have learned a lot regarding the 300RUM from some posts by "Tumbleweed" I do believe he ran the numbers on the 215 and 245. There is a post comparing velocity, energy, drop and wind drift by him in here somewhere. There may be the answers to your question. I believe he stuck with the 215 Berger. Have a great day!

I'll try to find those posts. What little bit of info I've been able to find it looks like it's hard to beat the 215 at 300RUM velocities, maybe try the 245 anyways. Let me know how your testing goes. Thanks!

I wanted to go with the 245, but I don't have the twist to stabilize. Like Big Trouble, I have the 230 going around 2920 and can go up. I found a node that I couldn't pass up. The 215 is a terrific bullet, I chose the 230 for more retained weight and going after mostly elk with this rifle. I tested the 230 on whitetails before elk and I have zero issues using this bullet for anything this guy can afford to hunt.

I think a lot depends on what you will be hunting. I haven't used either bullet but I am in the process of rebarreling a 300 RUM to 30 Nosler and I have talked to a lot of people about bullet choice for elk. I have shot several elk, but they have all been within 200 yards. Although I anticipate that I will start hunting in places where my ranges will be extended, I still want to be prepared for a close range shot. What I have been told is that the 230 gr Berger would be better if I should have an under 300 yard shot. As @ Jcook02 suggested, they are supposed to be hold together better. So, I am going to try the 230 gr Hybrid targets and the 199 gr Hammer Hunters.

With that said, I have a pretty good shooting load with 210 Berger VLD hunting bullets that I use in another 300 RUM. Although it works great on WV whitetail does, I wasn't confident that it would work well when I drew a Wyoming moose tag. After a couple of close range moose with Nosler Accubonds, I chose a stouter bullet for that hunt. However, if it were September 1 and the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources called me up saying someone had turned in an early rifle San Juan tag and I was next on the list, and if my 30 Nosler was not done, I would be going with the 210 VLDs.

Here is a thread with my results so far. Nothing on game yet.

Flip a coin based on the velocity between the two. Both shoot well. I think my barrel is pretty slow also...

Heaviest bullet I have used is the 230g OTM, this is in a 32" barreled 300WM.
I didn't find a huge difference in trajectory to 1000 over either the 200g CC or 215g Berger Hybrid.
I now use the 210g ABLR, works for me.
I don't have a fast enough twist for the 245/250g class.
What velocity will you be getting?

Cheers.

Thanks for the info!

In that 9 twist I'd push a 199 Hammer as fast as you could. Betting 3200 plus easy. mtmuley
Not sure what the BC is of the 199 hammer, but I'll check it out. Reason for wanting Berger is high BC and I've had great long range accuracy with them in other rifles. Thanks

We have it listed at .299 g7. The 8" twist Brownings both netted on drops to 800y with a bc of .323 g7. The last 9" twist We loaded matched the listed .299 bc.
