So I have a friend who is left handed and asked what would be a good rifle choice for hunting big game in pump, lever, or maybe even semi auto action with good accuracy? He doesn't get along real well with bolt actions so I thought I'd ask you all .

I am a lefty and have had all of those and some single shots. All of them worked well for me. He will have to answer most of the questions himself by handling different types of rifles to see what feels right to him. A lot of choices can be narrowed down by the game he hunts, distance he shoots, and his budget. Getting used to a left hand bolt would be my first choice. I hunted several years with an old 308 Browning blr and it was a great rifle. Had a Remington pump 30/06 that was great too. A savage 99 is still my go to pig gun. My gunsmith built a 25 gibbs that would shoot with just about any rifle made.It was a Remington pump.I am not a big Remington auto fan but they make a nice 300 and under rifle.
Not much help but it's kinda like asking somebody to pick your wife for you. Lots of good choices but he is the only one that can pick what is right for him. The good news is it's much cheaper to change rifles!I
The only brass issue's I have had were with some semi auto 22 s

Nemo Arms Omen 300 Watchman Win Mag, 24" barrel, 10lbs. They are semi auto and have a hyrdraulic piston system to reduce recoil. Should be 1 MOA semi-auto and my friends (who is left handed) loves both of hers. Very easy to shoot and accurate.

A left handed bolt would make the most sense, followed by the single shots. I never liked the rattle of the fore end on the pump I had, but it shot well.

I'm not left handed, or left eye dominant, and like was said the variables are his and need to be sorted out.

I am a lefty, or actually a righty but I am left eye dominant so I have always shot guns, bows, and pool left handed.

I have owned, and still own, a lot of Browning BPS pumps over the last 40ish years, in large part due to the bottom eject. I can't do a cross face eject, it can just be a miserable experience. Granted, this is due to using a semi auto shotgun for bird hunting but I would occasionally get hit by residue coming out with the shell.

That said, I can operate a bolt fine whether it is RH or LH. I have a McM Game Hunter stock in a 30N with a right bolt. It was either get the gun well ahead of hunting season in RH or wait for a LH and get the rifle right before hunting season. I grew up shooting RH bolts so it wasn't a hard decision to get the rifle well ahead of the season even though it is a RH bolt. This is my elk gun, but some of the below could fill that need.

I have all my sporter style stocks in LH for the cheek piece, which I like to have for my deer rifles. I find it is hard to shoot LR for whitetails bc of the pop up blinds, stands, and box blinds make it hard to shoot much over 500 for me, and most whitetail is done inside of that anyway. And sporter type stocks are better all around as deer guns bc I rarely shoot deer prone. Here I have 2 280 AI's and a 30-06. I may rebarrel one of the 280's into a 6.5-284.

The exception to the above is my 11 yr old's 6.5cr. That thing is a joy to shoot and I need to do sight ins, figure out drops, load tweaking, etc, bc my son isn't quite ready for that stuff yet. It is a sporter stock with a cheek piece in RH stock and RH bolt. It is the most accurate gun I own, at least in my hands, so I can shoot it just fine. .3 MOA groups usually happen once or twice a range session.

I say all that to say that i have owned a random assortment of LH and RH bolt and stock combinations. I get the cross face thing, bc I hate it and can it make a hunt frustrating and/or miserable. But I have found that I can learn to operate a bolt well enough with a little practice. Follow up shots may not be quite as fast, but I have yet to come close to running into any issues. I can see how that may be something that folks would want to avoid but it is not a big deal for me. And bolt actions are simpler to reload for and more accurate, so my advice would be to get a LH bolt, and whatever issues he has can be overcome with practice - unless he needs a lightning fast follow up shot.

I'm left eye dominanat as well, I've always shot left hannded with right handed weapons . never slowed me down. I have friends who are left handed and their fathers or grandfathers taught them to " shoot, hold the gun like this" right handed from a very young age.

I am right handed & left eye dominant. I shoot right handed. When I first started, I shot a lot of single shots both ways. Shooting right hand repeaters lefty, it all depends on the extraction force and where the brass flys. With pumps and lever actions, you can control the ejection force better and have brass just flop out of the action. Best to test with a semi-auto to see where the brass is going. I don't know what your friend's issues are with bolt actions, but if he is going to shoot lefty, my recommendation would be single shot, lefty bolt action, lefty Blaser rifle, lefty AR10 in a decent hunting round.

What is your friend's dominant eye? Once we know that we can make better recommendations.
