Absolute Hammer load data

Finished up load development with my 6.5 Creed and the 123 Absolute today.
The battery died in Magnetospeed after 3 shots, so I don't have my usual 5 shot velocity numbers.
Ended up with 44.3 gr of BL-C(2)
ES of 6
3114 fps average.
0.62" moa group in 15-20 mph winds
Temp was 61 degrees today. Ran a few over the chrono yesterday and got 3137 fps with the same charge but temps were in the high 80's. I haven't seen numbers for this powders temp sensitivity, but it is a ball powder and it seems to be about 1 fps per 1 degree temp.
Nice trigger work Brother

very nice!
you're getting almost my exact velocity numbers with imr-4166; but much better groups! I'm going to play in a few tenths of grains up/down from my last test and see if i can tighten them up a bit, or if i'll have to switch powders. Just need time, home projects and a 3 year old take a lot of time...

.270 Win./116gr. Absolute Hammer
My friend brought over his 24" barrel Christensen .270 Win. today and we tested 3 different powders he had available. (All of my previous experiments were with my 20" barrel.)
Primer: Fed. 210, COAL: 3.330,Twist: 1-10",
Case:Nosler (new), Neck Tension: .002, Temp:62F

IMR 4350 & 116 gr AH
57.0 gr. 3174 FPS
58.0 gr. 3214 FPS
59.0 gr. 3308 FPS
60.0 gr. (C) 3327 FPS (slightly flattened primer)
Reasonable accuracy, no other pressure indications.

IMR 4064 & 116 gr. AH
51.0 gr. 3092 FPS
52.0 gr. 3163 FPS
53.0 gr. 3246 FPS
54.0 gr. 3335 FPS
55.0 gr. 3404 FPS (slight primer flattening)
Reasonable accuracy, & no other pressure indications.

H414 & 116 gr. AH
56.0 gr. 3208 FPS
57.0 gr. 3248 FPS
58.0 gr. 3275 FPS
59.0 gr. 3311 FPS
60.0 gr. 3386 FPS
Outstanding accuracy! No pressure indications with any of the listed loads with H414.

We have a new believer!

I just would like to throw in a little range report, using 25.06ai, 26 in barrel. Bullet is 92 HH. With another powder, H4831sc, I originally loaded a very accurate load, using 61 grains . Velocity unknown exactly, but believe to have been around 3500 ish. Long story short, experimented with 7828ssc, with same weight other brand bullets.
Loaded a sample, with HH, 92 grain, and the pics will show you what I got. Search is over.

Good job and good shooting!
I too load some Hammer Hunters and some Absolutes. Some of my rifles shoot Hunters so well I'm reluctant to switch😛
I have some Fowler match bullets, that I got with the rifle, last spring. These things shoot as good, if not better then the actual match bullets. This rifle seldom breaks 1/2 inch, and .3's are quite common. That group is 1/4 all day. To say I'm impressed is an understatement.
Next project is 7.08. I'll get with you on that.
Cheers to all. May this year be better then last. To all, be safe!

Played with a Bunch of powder in 7-08ai and 280ai

7-08ai 18" McGowan 1:8.5 Fireformed 1x Lapua.

130AH- Loaded to 2.815 (max mag length in Model 7)
This rifle doesn't seem to love this bullet, I'm going to try the 119AH and the 120HH
47 Gr Varget ~3040. Very low ES, but wont group under 1.5"
44.1 H4895 3000, Single digit ES, right around 1" (I'm calling this my winner right, will play with crimp to see if it settles down)
Benchmark- ~3050 Also with low ES. Showed promise, but I'm out of this powder.

I tried slowing them down, and running them up a little higher (pretty much all of them pressured out around 3075-3100), Tried a couple different primers, both MLR and LR. Can't seem to tighten them up much. Rifle shoots 130 MK around 5/8"-3/4" (My minimal work up fireforming load).

Tikka 280ai 22" Carbon Six featherweight, 1:8. Nosler brass- some new, some 1x

All loaded to 3.30, My max mag length.
This one was a little finicky, too. Anyone finding the AH a little tougher to tune than the HH?

140AH- Never did get this one to settle down.

RL16- Got crunchy around 3255. This ladder shot a 4" group, with no two close together.
H100V- Maxed out around 3320, again scattered all over the place.
H4350- Topped out around 3220, accuracy slightly better, but not worth pursuing.
N555- right around 3200. This was the closest I got, still well over an inch.

I shot some 168 noslers to verify the rifle was still shooting occasionally during all this- still cloverleafs.

155AH
RL16- ~3100 low es, around 1.5"
N555- Got around 3170, never saw pressure but was very compressed. Around 3100 shot a little over 1"
H100V- 3100ish, again in a shotgun pattern. I know a lot of people are having great luck with this powder, but my rifle is not a fan.

Decided to try a slower powder just to see what these did, since they seemed to shoot better at the lower end of the above ladders anyway.

RL23- Started mid 50s, ladder suddenly tightened up about 2900, and then started stacking them tight up until I ran out of room. Only 2985, but shoots cloverleafs with single digit ES.

It will be interesting to revisit some of these when this barrel speeds up. I've not played much with the AH until now, too many other projects. Compared to the HH, they sure seem to be more finicky. I guess I got spoiled with just shooting a 3-4 grain pressure test into an inch pretty consistently. Of course these are both also new barrels, so who knows.

Most find both Hunters and Absolutes very easy to tune to a good load. Got some curiosities:
1) Did you break in your new barrel(s)?
2) what is your barrel cleaning regimen?
3) all hammers seem to like some jump. It sounds like you're trying to seat them as long as your magazines allow.
Try starting your seating to the last pdr band - then go deeper into the case
Keep us posted!

Both barrels broken in with regular cup and core, per manufacturers directions. Both had ~50 down the pipe prior to starting with the AH. Both scrubbed 100% clean prior to work with the AH. I started cleaning after each trip to the range with hammers, typically 10-15 rounds per gun. Tried leaving them dirty, to see if that helped at all- I usually don't do a heavy cleaning very often once they are broken in. Both bores look good with borescope, neither copper fouled much at all during break In. Neither have hit a velocity jump yet, should be getting close, round counts are 120ish now.

Both are short magazines and long bullets, and all bands are buried in the case. Since the AH doesn't touch the lands anywhere on the ogive, they still have a lot of jump, as verified with stony point gauge.

I've worked up various other hammers for 8-10 rifles now, and rarely had to hunt for something that worked very well. Both rifles shoot other bullets quite well, but I dont have any other .284 hammers or other monos on hand. Very odd indeed.
