A 25 Gibbs would round out my Gibbs collection. I have a 240 Gibbs and a 6.5 Gibbs. As you can tell, I tend toward the smaller calibers with my shoulder problems.

Well, my two cents.....
Since you mentioned a 22'' barrel I assume this is meant to be a light weight short to mid range carrying and hunting rifle. I've had a .257 Roberts, .25-06 and .25-06 AI.. For the last two or three years I've been shooting a .25 Creed a lot. Not interested in the 130 grain class of bullet although I have loaded 115 Bergers which shot very well. However, my favorite hunting bullet for coyotes, pigs and deer is the 100 grain ballistic tip. Crazy velocity and can reload the Lapua small primer pocket brass a LOT of times. The 100 grain BT's are running 3,300 fps with either 4064 or 4166.. Probably some other powders as well but those two I've used a lot. My barrels are a bit longer at 24''..
Brass is a one pass deal through a 6.5 Creed Redding Type S die with the appropriate bushing to neck it down to .25... It's a great combo.

It may seem like an odd question, but how's the recoil on a .257Weatherby??
Im considering one for my young nephew, who wants to get into deer hunting so bad, and has no one to take him....his Dad doesn't hunt. I have my own 2 boys to deal with but I'm gonna try to get him in the mix. He's 13 but all skin and bones.
I know the .257WBY isn't bad, but compared to a .260 how's it kick??
I know a .243 or 6mm would be perfect but if the nephew changes his tune and loses interest, old uncle Mark (yours truly) has always wanted a .257. Gotta look at all the possible outcomes. Lol
I'm for anything 25cal except the Needmoor
if you dont mind some light wildcatting I would look hard at the 25 souper I know a couple people shooting them and they love them simple neck up of 243 or neck down 260 and get after it and it sounds alot cooler than a 25 needmoor as Mr. Bean calls them if you really want to be cool do it ackley improved you wll have access to much better brass going this direction over the wonderful Roberts

Using Chuck Hawks recoil table for comparisons: using a 100 grain projectile, the 250 Savage is at 7.9 lbs, the 257 Roberts is at 9.7 lbs, and the 257 Weatherby Mag is at 15.8. How that translates to the individual feeling is up for question, but it does give a technical comparison. For what it's worth...

Have a MK5 RC in 257Wby... probably my most favorite to shoot.. loves the Barnes TTSX or TSX in 100grain.. 1/2" or better... great caliber. As far as recoil, imo it's not bad. But I shoot other large magnums that have more thump .. so I don't think it's bad. My daughter shoots it for hogs and whitetail.. she's about 5'4 and 110 or so she doesn't complain...you mentioned .243, she shoots it as well. She likes both, but if given the choice she picks the 257.. Take him to the range or a place to shoot at and let him try both. Sometimes what we think will work is the complete opposite.. let him pick. You might be surprised.. main thing is getting him involved..! We need the next generation more involved in shooting/hunting... & kudos for taking the time ... hope it all works out! Let us know which one he likes
Of course, you could always AI the 243. It is a potent but easy shooting caliber. I love mine. Shoots .5 groups when I do my part, and shoots .7 groups when fire forming.

Thanks Feenix. Great tool and lots of variables covered. Bottom line is that what is comfortable for one might be excessive for the next person, but tools like this give us a comparison to start from.

My main deer rifle is a 257 Roberts on a long action, if you really want a short action go with a 250AI. I had a Jarrett Windwalker on a 600 action, The biggest mistake I ever made was selling it.
