Savage needs to buy a scale or fire attorneys

I've packed my 14lb+ Lapua on an elk hunt were I was hiking 2000'+ elevation most days for a week. Then shot an elk at 160 yards. Could have packed my 6lb 6.5 creedmoor or 9lb 300 win all week and killed that elk just as well. I didn't mind packing the Lapua around all week because it gave me the confidence that I could shot and kill an elk 400 or 500 yards across a canyon without the limitations the 6.5 creed would cause.

Perhaps a happy medium would have been to carry a 6.5 PRC

I am a long time savage fan and currently own 6 savage rifles. They are an innovative company so of course was not surprised to see them launch a line of straight pull rifles

All excitement ended when I saw the 22" barreled straight pull rifle weighing in at 11lbs. This follows the launch of the new Renegauge shotgun, that seems to have an innovative action, also weighs in over 10 lbs. I think randy wakeman referred to it as the worst shotgun he had reviewed in recent memory

Just don't see how such a strong engineering company can be so far out of step with competitive products or user preference. If it's the attorneys demanding that degree of robustness in an action driving the weight they need to retain new counsel

Anyone else feel similarly about these two new products? Ideally savage is processing the his feedback
well if you don't like either one of these guns, DON'T BUY them. I personally like heavier guns, they tend to be much more accurate and much less recoil. I hear Red Ryder makes a light weight gun, maybe that would be good for your collection ?

Have you shot one? I bought one ASAP. It shoots like a dream. U just point it. That's all I do. Outside of being the best shooting shotgun I've ever owned, (even better than my old 1100 or V3 - which comes in close!), it is far & away the fastest shooter I've ever busted clay's with. I've let others shoot & they were all impressed. I picked out a petite little lady at the range & asked her to shoot it. Though it looks intimidating she tried it. Afterwards she stood there with her mouth agape, turned towards me in disbelief & exclaimed, "It doesn't kick ar all!" I bought one, LOVE IT & have never looked back. If you don't like it don't buy it!
Put it on a reliable scale and tell us what it weighs. Regards.

Alright Texas
Come pack that heavy rifle around at 8000 feet in the northwest.
I'll routinely climb 1500' of vertical and cover up to 8 miles a day chasing elk.
9lbs scoped is the heaviest I'll go

I've hunted wilderness areas in CO since 1982 & the parking lot is over 7000 feet in elevation & just goes up from there, all the way to 14000 feet if you so desire. I routinely hunt in the 10000 feet range & I've never had a rifle that weighed, when fully loaded under 11 lbs. I've been backpack hunting since the mid 1990's & am using my third different rifle & it seems every time I change rifles, the weight goes up. This past October I hunted that same wilderness, with a backpack & my third different rifle weighed north of 15 lbs. But I might add, I'm young, agile, & spry, I'll turn 64 this April. Wah, wah, wah, everyone or most everyone complains about too heavy, need the next great thing in lightweight equipment. My loaded pack for 1-2 weeks of hunting, not including my rifle, weighs over 80 lbs. Loose some weight & do more exercising, as some one else mentioned. Nuff said, keep your powder dry.

Sounds like somebody needs to workout / exercise so they can carry a couple extra pounds. The only lite weight rifles that I own are 22 lr's.

This kind of post always makes me think this is a young person who does not realize people grow old. How much does a 70 year old guy who is 150 have to work out to carry an eleven pound rifle? If they are hunting in the west they are already exercising.

Rifle weight is becoming a hot topic of debate here on LRH. I've got heavy & lighter rifles both. Heavier or lighter, no matter which direction you go, it's a trade off of something. If I'm shooting at a world record animal, I'm probably going to be excited with my heart rate very high. Then I want my rifle to weight about 20lbs. If I'm hiking up to 14000 feet looking for that animal, I want my rifle to weight about 5lbs. I see both sides of it, but the trade off either way is undeniable.

I have looked at the new straight pull Savage.. it's basically a Feym patent in the modern era. I personally would not trust this gun's locking mechanism, but it is a safe locking mech until the stem that keeps the ball bearings in place fractures as with the Feym back in WWII. This is my personal opinion. Please no hate. What I was expecting was basically a K-31 Swiss 7.5X55 action. this surprised me. that is all I have to say on the subject.

My dad has a Mauser 270 win that has a straight pull. I think it's a Mauser 96 but I'm not certain. I think they called it a slide bolt. They were made in the late 90s/early 2000s. We've shot it just a little bit. It shot pretty decent. It seems more of a novelty piece to me. Nothing wrong with it but it's not anything that I necessarily gravitate to.
