1:8" for 300WM: Is this too fast?

Its my uncles rifle and he lives in the yukon. Hes been using it for a year or two and when i made the load it didnt have an issue loading to the lands in the browning mag with 212 eldx.

I don't think it's too fast, especially if you're going to try 230gn or heavier. I think the standard 10t will stabilize up to the 230's and I know it will the 212/215gn bullets. I shot those in my .300WinMag until the barrel went south and then I went with a 28", 9t and very pleased. Now I'm getting 3060-3070fps from the 215gn Berger Hybrids and 212gn ELD-Xs, respectively, and both are producing 1/2 MOA out to 1K.

8 is perfect. Why do you think most 300 prc factory offerings have an 8 twist. Heavy bullets are in with long range shooting and fast twist offer's advantage over slower twists. It actually gains you some bc

Just because factory offers 8 twist doesnt mean its optimum, Frank Green of Bartlein who helped develop the develop the 300 PRC only runs a 9.
B.C is B.C you cant gain by spinning faster only loose by going to slow and a 10 isnt gonna loose any B.C

That really depends on the bullet you're going to shoot, i.e., Hammer Bullets recommends 1:9" or faster on their 214s (https://hammerbullets.com/product/308-cal-214g-hammer-hunter/) and 1:8" or faster on their 227s (https://hammerbullets.com/product/308-cal-227g-hammer-hunter/).

So i guess if we decide to use hammerhead bullets inv that weigth is better order a new barrel for the rifle?

Aye Sir! I am running 1:9" on one of my .30 cals to propel the 215/230 Bergers.

Yes for that particular Bullet you would need new barrel. That being said it's mono so they get long fast and can start to become counter productive with to big of bullet moving slow.
I dropped down front the 215 Berger to the 181 hammers in mine and don't feel I lost anything. The extra speed I gained help balance out the lesser bc. Plus it gets me to 1000 yards which sounds like this guys goals are under that for game animals. A 10 twist would be just fine for him.

nope. elevation change in each shot, will get worse as distance grows.

the military shooting 220smks in a 300 win mag use a 1/10( 1500 YARDS plus)
my 1000 yard bench gun shooting 210s is a 1/10
there is no reason for a 1/8 NONE
