300 WSM

To get the best out of the Win I have to put in longer mag boxes and throats too same as the WSM, the WSM I can drop into a Rem long action for the over all performance I'll do the WSM every time!!

SAAMI isn't even remotely ideal in either chamberings, workable but definitely not putting either at their ideal for what were talking.
Agree on this, however increasing free bore and etc just will not work with a short action and even extended magazine. Thanks for the discussion. I do appreciate your opinion.

It doesn't work for the Win either unless you increase freebore and mag box, they are equally crappy when wrong and equally awesome when done right. I've lost track of how many I've done of both!!

Not my numbers do the math these are straight from Bergers web site.
210. 1.470 O.AL. - .209 Boatail = 1.261
Case 1.802 to neck shoulder junction
+1.261 = 3.062 O.A.L
215. 1.598 O.A.L - .263 Boatail = 1.335
1.802 + 1.335 = 3.137 O.A.L

64 grains with win mag primers gave me 3065 with the 168 TTSX with no pressure last weekend. They grouped a lot better than the Hammers in my gun. Hopefully I will try and verify the load this coming weekend.

This is unsolicited advice but I've shot a LOT of elk with 168 Barnes of all the flavors and Hammers, the Hammer is so superior in terminal performance I would take larger groups way before shooting the 168 Barnes ever again at an elk. The expansion diameter and it not being able to shed some frontal area in hard hits and low momentum really have caused some messes, the Hammer will absalutely open make solid wound channels yet penetrate heavy hits.

Why do you think the 200+ bullets work better in 300wsm? Most people think the opposite due to case lose.

Most people are stuck in a box. It's a myth. The same guys will insist a 30-06 is more effective with heavy bullets even though the WSM is cranking heavies out 100+ fps faster. The WSM case works very well with heavies even in SAAMI length. If you're not comfortable crunching slow burning powder, use a faster burn rate powder in the 4350 area. The 210 Berger with H4350 is a known favorite combination in competitive circles.

Don't totally agree. I think it will be a bit more if one is shot out of a short action and the other in a long action, which begs the question why use a short action with the heavies? With heavies and using a short action, there will be a lot of bullet in the case if the chamber is industry spec...less room for powder. Just seems to me to use the 300 WM for heavies. By the way, I own both and my opinions are based on my experience.

Set your SA WSM up with 200 grainers and a Max charge of RL26 and watch the gap slam shut.

Have an elk hunt in the next couple of weeks so not willing to change my load yet. However, I will give your suggestion and others a try after the hunting season...I do like shooting heavies.

Try the 230 OTM just for humor. Depending on how your rifle is set up, I wouldn't be surprised to see you get 2800+ fps.

I settled on the 200.20x for my 300WSM. During load testing I stopped at 3020ish FPS using RL26 because that's the highest I had loaded. There were slight ejector marks at that speed but with the soft FC brass I'm using I usually see that no matter the load? I dropped down to a pretty good node at 2930fps and am planning on using that. Personally I can't get on the Barnes train...I like big holes in my game.lol

Do you mind sharing that load recipe? I understand about loading safety and etc. if you don't want to post here, please send me a PM. Thanks.

Yeah, not a problem. I do have a XM action so running over SAAMI cola.

CCI 250, FC brass, 69grn RL26, Berger 200.20x, coal 3.118" (only use CBTO when loading but can't remember that right now). Ave 2932fps, SD 7.2.
