Caliber advice

I think my biggest question would be how much do plan to shoot, how much recoil are you ok with and do you reload.

If you reload and shoot a bunch 280 ai
If you don't plan on shooting much and you reload 28 nosler

If you don't reload and you want to shoot quite a bit I would lean 300 prc or 300wm or 7rm

I am looking for advice on caliber for a custom build.
Max range: 600yds
Game: Medium to large sized game
Rifle Specs.: Barrel length less than 26 inches (I want the rifle to be easy to maneuver and carry but hit like a hammer)

I was originally thinking 300 WM but with a barrel less than 26 in I don't think it would be a good choice. What about 300 WSM?
338WM

Another vote for 7mm Rem Mag. Nothing wrong with the larger calibers, but they sure do add a lot of recoil to the equation. You seem to be leaning toward the 300 WSM. I'd pick that over the 300WM personally.

375 H&H. With 250gr GMX Superformance its ballistics is almost identical to a 300WSM (Nosler 180gr Accubond), but delivers quite a bit more energy, let alone TKO (23 vs 14)

I am sure there is many similar solutions one can come up with for different calibers/bullets/loads.

I'm right the opposite, I'm nostalgic with the ole belted work horse.

It would be a no-brainer if just medium game is the objective.

Go with a fast-twist 6.5 if max game weight is under 600 lb. Plan to use lead free bullets or partitions.

Should you be interested in game heavier than 800 lb, then a fast-twist 30 cal and heavy bullets would be best.

I thought it was recommended that 300 WM be barrelled in a minimum of 26 in. That's why I mentioned 300 WSM.
Will a short mag be more efficient than a long mag with a shorter barrel?
I do want to run heavy for caliber bullets.
I've owned three, 300 Win Mags and they all came with 24" barrels. Go read that test I posted, it's very fascinating. I believe a WSM would work better with the shortened barrel.

I'm very much considering cutting my M77 down to 21", but the muzzle blast will get fierce.

What's the old saying, the 300WM may not be the best answer, but it's never the wrong answer? I get it.. it's a great cartridge! Personally I'm a fan of not having more recoil than necessary because it affects my ability to shoot accurately when you start getting above a 30-06 or so. Whatever works for you. There is so many capable cartridges now, what cartridge to get is almost a pointless question. We should be asking "which ones shouldn't I get?"

Can't beat the 30-06!!! With today's powder and projectiles, it's superb! Hornady Superperformance ammo has it shooting like the 300 Mag!
