308 or 30-06 with heavy’s

Going short barrel to run a suppressor. Will be used for hunting out to 400 yards. Mainly inside of 200 yards on elk. Was wanting to mainly shoot 200 grain Nosler Partitions and Barnns 175LRX Bullets.

Brian
Cut down the 308. Use a partition. Or try the hammer hunters. Should be real flat inside 300, and not much drop at 400.

I would be possibly concerned about heavy bullet stability in the suppressor with the shorter barrel. I would personally lean to shortening the '06 since more powder capacity would open the option of more powder and velocity to regain bullet stability. As stated by others, check bullet stability BEFORE screwing that suppressor on. Good luck and please update later with your decision and results. I am perfectly willing to learn from others mistakes and triumphs rather than have to repeat them for myself, which after all is one of the great info sharing benefits of forums. Thank you for sharing.

What would be best, or highest velocity in a 20" 1-10 twist barrel? 308 Win or a 30-06? Will be shooting 180-215 grain bullets.

Brian
Gee. Even with a .308 Winchester, 24-inch barrel and 180s yer only gonna get 2600-fps.
And what are we hunting? - How far?

And .30-06 with same barrel length (24), and bullet (180) = 2800-fps

Shoot what you want, but I really like long barrels. At the present time I have one 308 and four 30-06's.I know there are fast and slow barrels at

any given length. But here's how mine do with a 168gr Nosler Ballistic Tip.My 26" barrel 308 did really well with TAC and Accurate 4064.A little better than 2800fps,.My Varget load runs about 2700fps.My 22"barrel 30-06 struggles to get around 2800fps.My two 24" barreled 30-06's max out around 2900fps and my 28" barreled 30-06 can easily do around 3030fps ave.

2630 fps with 180 Nosler BTs @ 18" barrel length (Rock Creek) using RL 16. At 105% of book value I was getting just over 2700 fps with that powder/bullet combo. I chose a lower velocity in favor of accuracy.

For reference, I can just get over 2600 fps out of a Rock Creek barreled 308 @ 20" using 180 Hornady SSTs and Varget. So 2 more inches of barrel and ~ maybe 30-100 fps less velocity.

I haven't put both rifles next to each other, but I think they're likely the same overall length.

I have no doubt that you can push a 200gr projectile to 2600 fps out of a 20" barrel. Be not afraid. It's a fun rifle when its done.

Wow. 90% of the velocity with 2/3 of the powder. Some cartridge!

The smaller capacity cartridges are more efficient for sure. You pay to play with the larger capacity cartridges, more speed and powder leads to less barrel life. A properly setup 300 win mag will definitely push the 215 over 2850 fps. I have a 308, used to have a 30-06 (didn't really do it for me) and two win mags. I shoot the 215's out of one of my win mags and settled on a accuracy node a few fps shy of 3000 but got over 3060 before I saw pressure signs.
