6.5 Creed replace the .308 for hunting?

I would rebarrel to a more efficient caliber like the creedmoor any day. However, The savage 1899 has a short magazine box and it might be difficult to get factory 6.5creedmoor loads to fit. I think if you reload with lighter 120gr bullets you will better off. If I was you and rebarreling my 1899 I would go with the 250savage or the 250 savage ackley improved in a fast twist barrel and shoot those new super duper blackjack .25 caliber bullets.

SO, let's say you have a nice .308 hunting rifle you like but the accuracy has dropped off and it needs re-barreling. Would you re-barrel in 6.5 Creedmoor? I face this question with my .308 Savage 99 C.

For hunting purposes, plain and simple...No. The heavier and larger diameter .308 bullets will outperform the 6.5mm bullets on larger game. But, if you were to rebarrel to a 6.5mm for some reason, you rebarrel it to a .260 AI., or split the difference and go with the 7mm-08 AI.

Noticed you hadn't been here much lately, hope things are moving in a generally more positive direction for you.

As for the post, my interest in a Savage 99 would be a wall hanger if it held sentimental value.

As far as 6.5 vs .308 I think considering the advances in bullets, a good 6.5 will certainly get most of it done. Whether it's a 6.5 CM, 6.5/06 a 6.5x284 is another question entirely

For the most part. Starting back over from the ground up is always rough...Especially when you still have lots of debt. I've had to do it 3 times in 3 years thanks to bullcrap local jobs that treated you like cattle and didn't want to pay anything. This job is one that I can turn into a real career and have chances for advancement, so I'm feeling positive about it.

The 6.5x55 - which is similar to the Creedmoor in its ballistics - has been used (and has worked very well) on big game throughout Europe and Africa for years. I'm not sure that the .308 will outperform it in all circumstances. That said, I have hunting rifles in both calibers and find myself more often than not picking up the .308 when I go into the field.

I have a 308 Rem just setting. Bought a B&C a5 for it . I have about 300 rounds for my boy to get some trigger time and then it's going to get a 260 barrel. I need to read up on the 260 ai.Talked to the Smith already, that's a bad thing my wife says .lol still thinking about it

Welllll... I have a Ruger Precision Rifle in 6.5 CM and a Browning X-Bolt Pro in 6.5 CM.

So, perhaps I should leave the Savage 99 in .308. I have dies for .308 and lots of cases and bullets. I've killed enough deer with it so I know the cartridge "works".
But in re-barrelling it I'll still get a Bartlein W/ 5R rifling and get it machined into an octagon 24" barrel. Then a nice custom Wienig laminated stock. (It's so liberating to have my house paid off last month. ;o)
