Hunting with the 6.5/06

spoonbill: the 6.5x55 is a great and time tested round. the 6.5x284 in a long action is = to the 6.5/06 . it actually holds about 1.5 grains more of the same powder and shoot about the same as my 25" bbl and it has a 24'. No it is not the same as the 6.5x55 it is like the 6.5 X55 Improved. The best of the group is the 6.5/06 due to the history and ease of forming cases . I use 270 brass trim to 63 mm after resizing and wham o .It was first built in the 20s & 30s called the 256 Newton and no commerical company ever produced it outside of the Newton rifle company. It was ahead of it time and powders at this time . tThe 6.5x06 is the perfect sheep and mountian goat rifle and it is tough on the Montana envasive species call the Grey wolf. 130 nosler accubonds at 3050.

Is the load data for the 6.5 - 06 that much different from the 264 Win Mag?
Depending on powder selection and bullet weight:

6.5 X 284-IMR 4831 (47.8 gr.) Max. (2760 fps.)

6.5PRC, 140g BT, 24" barrel, 2966fps with IMR 8133 per Hodgdon
6.5-06AI, 140g BT, 24" barrel, 3075fps with H100V (my rifle)

yes, the powders used in the 264 is a good start but I personally do not like IMR 4831 because it it to fast for the 6.5/06 which is a true magnum. Reloade 25 26 Imr 7828 and H 1000 will give yoou 150 fps more velocity with the same pressure as the IMR 4831. the imr 4831 is almost the same as 4350 in burning rate. faster than Reloader 19..... all using the 140 g b

MW-where did you find the pressure date for R26? I haven't been able to find it but maybe I haven't look in zee right place

dogz I would lood at r-25 and the pressure load for it is real good and I understand that 26 is even better. when I can get some I will try 52 grains with a 140 and I feel I can use up to 54 but reloader 25 is a good start.

Thx, I did all my 6.5/06 work pre R25 and R26. Think they both could work well. Seems to me we mainly used 7828 and H4831. Been a while back, hate to trust the memory:(
