BS or not?

10 yrs or so ago I knew a guy that was one of those 40yr old dudes that's still a Marine when they need him to be. Best shooter I've ever seen. Him and my old man got to talking one day and my dad politely asked just how good are you, so he picked up my dads .270 win and shot a dove off a limb at somewhere in the neighborhood of 150-175 yards freehand with whatever trash ammo I happened to have, freehand. Me, my dad, and my father-in-law were amazed. My dad still talks about that shot.
There are people out there capable of shooting amazingly well. But there's a lot more who just run their mouth about a freak accident where 3 bullets got close enough to touching that they call it a one hole group. Now all of a sudden they are world class shooters or something.
That guy is no longer with us, he took his own life, but I was grateful to get to spend a little time getting to know him, he was a little more comfortable telling stories to a fellow Marine even though I never came close to what he went through.
So to OP, I tend to trust the older guys a little more than the younger ones, I'm only 36...maybe it's just how I was raised but guys my dad's age get the benefit of the doubt while folks my age have to earn it.

When I was in jr high at our local shooting club small bore.A marine instructor came in and got set up on the line and aimed at target, this was pistol, took his stance, then they blind folded him and he shot his clip, most in black or on paper.Showing his form and muscle memory. It impressed me.

I mean all of us have this weird..wonderful..bizarre shot or group at various distances...estimated the yardage long or read the wind wrong or both at the same time but the deer or elk lifted it's head into the path of the bullet..I mean weirdness happens.

I had a clover leaf 4 round group with a WW2 G43 semi auto Sniper rifle at 100 yards with WW2 vintage German heavy ball and period scope... rifle short stroked on the 4 th round so a 5th wasn't fired...I don't think the majority of G43 made at the time is capable of much better than 2 inches at 100 yards ...never mind with surplus ammo..of suspect storage...

It was an oddity...probably never be able to even come close to that ever again..

So was his group BS or not..don't know... repeatable or not...supply the ammo and the rifle and I am willing to try :)

I've shot some what I would consider impressive groups at long range. None of them have been repeatable. I've shot 3 groups my whole life that were under .1moa at 100(3 shots) but I cant consistently keep 5 shots any less than .3-.5. I managed to pull off a 4in group once at 1354 yards once. I went back the next day and couldnt hit the broad side of a barn. So possible? Yep. Repeatable? Doubtful.

Not probable, but certainly not impossible. The real question is, is it repeatable? I've shot a few hard to believe groups at long range, but I can't repeat them every time out .

This is it exactly, I have a few rifles that will shoot one hole groups at 100 yards even with factory ammo.....but to many variables to be consistent at it, Im just not that good of a shooter.
I shoot a lot...not competitively but recreationally and some days I'm clicking my heels and want to join the sniper team but the next day I'm sneaking out of the range embarrassed !
here's a target from a Kimber Montana 6.5-284 with a 24" #2 Benchmark 1-8 twist barrel shooting factory Nosler Trophy Grade 130gr Accubonds, I also had the same groups with my handholds of 53gr of R23

I'll bet that less than 5% of all shooters can consistently shoot 11/8" groups
at 500 yards! I just finished a book by a German sniper who claims to have hit a 6" Dia. target 42 times in a row at 1000M (1064 Y) and a man sized target 8 times at 2000M.
But he's not your average shooter! I think people exaggerate or outright fib about their shooting powers!
FYI the book is .."Down Range A Snipers Guide To Hitting Your Target"
And it's by Christian W. Schoedlbauer
I reckon he hasn't heard about the 6.5 CM he still shoots the archaic .338LM?

It most likely happened. One thing about the creed is the sammi reamer is set-up for the 140 factory load. It would be much mre likely this rifle has a sammi reamer chamber. It might happen 1in5 or 1in 10 groups when the weather allows. A day with intermittent clouds and bright sun nope. Wind switching from 1 to 5 or 7 to 11 as it gusts nope.
Too many people shoot a screamer and claim the rifle shoots .XXX groups. I had my best season in short range long ago. I had a season long agg under .250(.211) That's 5 5 shot groups a day for 10 shoots at our club. For every .0xx group I shot I would shoot 2 over .23 it seemed. When I read how someone's big boomer shoots .2-.3 all day you can imagine what I think. I'm sure they can shoot a group in that range it isn't hard today with the amount of great smiths and components. However they are not shooting 5 5round groups and getting that for an agg. Otherwise they would be claiming all the plastic wood trophies at the score matches across the country
