NEW 6.5 WIN. LONG RANGE MAGNUM!!!

Lol that's what makes wby cartridges awesome and way ahead of their time.
Key words... "Of their time"... It didn't take long once better powders and more technology came along to figure out this was archaic thinking, unless also going up in bullet diameter and weight.

The 264 is another great round that had a shoddy upbringing. 9tw and short throat. You'd think that the brain trust at Remington would have fixed it for a platform they are advertising as a long range rifle. Sendoro's are places for very long shots by definition. Buying a short throat wrong twisted rifle and then finding out you need to fix it to do what you want???
People are mocking Hornady for coming out with these replacement rounds. They are all twisted and throated for exactly what this forum's namesake is about.
Browning has started tight twisting their offerings yet there is very little love as of yet for their products.
Ruger at least has some following with the precision series. I'd like to see some more exposure for there hawkeye long range in 300 win mag. 9tw fully adj stock that isn't too tacticool.

not sure it was a shoddy upbringing it didn't have the internet hype and BS. it was twisted and throated for what was available back then 100-120 gr. flat base bullets. to me changing barrels is not a four letter word, people customize cars or their homes all the time.
twist them off, twist them on just another day in shooting sports

So why is the 264 not back on the radar? Because it's not new and shiny?

No ...
Because belted cases suck!
OMG did I just say it:eek:

I'd be shooting the 7 WSM if, it had, a longer "Neck" so yes, a 6.5 WSM would be great,.. don't they already have, a "Wildcat" 6.5 WSM available ? If I ever burn out, my .270 WSM barrel, I'll build, a 7mm-.270 WSM, the Canadian's are working on, this Cart for 1,000 yard Comp. and finding it to be VERY, good !
I built a 7-300 wsm this year and absolutely love it, same thing as a 7-270 wsm.
I'm actually necking up 270 wsm brass.
On a long action I'm getting 3000 fps with 180's, just shot a 2" 3 shot group at 840 yards.
There's a reason serious match shooters are choosing short fat cases vs excessively overbore, and belted mags.

On accurate shooter there's a rule for no political threads....

I think there needs to be a rule for no 6.5 threads, and you're instantly banned if you speak of the 6.5 creedmoor.

You don't see more 264 Win mags floating around because people just don't want them, it's that simple. I know a couple guys with 264s and I had one for a while. In original factory rifles they were great for shooting light bullets fast, but original guns don't do well with the newer trend towards heavier and longer bullets. If guys building custom guns wanted 264s then they'd just build one, but fewer people build those compared to the other ones you mentioned.

If a guy wanted to build a light weight rifle with low recoil for a fast 6.5, the obvious choice would be one of the short mags. The argument over short or long action is pointless, but a significant percentage of light weight rifles are built around short actions. That rules out the 264 Win Mag and opens the door for the PRC, SAUM, WSM, SS and any other short mag. From there it's just a matter of picking what works best for shooter. If he reloads and doesn't mind paying a premium for brass and dies, then any of them work. If he reloads but wants reasonably priced (under $100) dies then the options are a little more limited. If he wants the option of properly head stamped brass the options are now limited to the PRC or the SS; I don't think the 6.5 SAUM brass is readily available any more. If he want's factory ammo then there's only one real option for a short action 6.5 mag. Yes, 6.5 Rem Mag ammo is available but not readily available with what would be considered LR loads. Not to mention that it still comes in a distant last place when compared to the velocities from the other 6.5 short mag chamberings.

If somebody is building on a long action then the 264 Win Mag is in the running. The problem is that it comes up short in performance when compared to other 6.5 mags that fit in the same action. The 26 Nosler beats the 264 in the velocity department by a significant amount when both are loaded to the same pressures. With heavier bullets the Nosler creeps even farther ahead. The 6.5/300 Weatherby edges out the 26 Nosler by a bit but probably not enough to really matter. If you just want a 264 Win Mag just to be nostalgic or a gun "hipster", that's fine. But it's not superior to anything else that fits in the same action. If you're really looking to stay with the "original" 6.5 magnum, why isn't anyone coming to the defense of the 6.5x68? It predates the "new and shiny" 264 Win Mag, and has greater case capacity. Plus it has great brass available from RWS which is arguably better than Lapua.

People just build what they want for their own reasons. Everyone has their bias and it shows; just let folks build what they want and be happy for them. A 140gr bullet at 3000+ fps is the same regardless of what case it came from. If you like the performance of the 264 Win mag, there's no reason not to like the SAUM, WSM, PRC or SS or anything other case that throws a bullet out of the barrel at the equivalent velocity. If you like the "classic" belted mag case then build a 264 Win Mag. I don't have any strong feelings either way about belted case. If it's there great, if it's not there I'll be just fine. Just no rebated rims, those things suck......:)

Emphasis added

You (said in this fashion can be construed as referring to people in general) don't add a belt to a non-belted cartridge, just like you don't remove a belted from a belted cartridge. It's superfluous work.

When did I say that Weatherby didn't add a belt? I never said anything about adding a belt. I said people (like Weatherby?) who design cartridges don't add one when it's not necessary, and don't remove it when it's not necessary. Roy Weatherby might have added one, but that's a bit redundant.

That's still not saying anything about Weatherby doing it... I said it was pointless to do it.

You should be in politics.
