I wouldnt say a creedmore is a holy grail. I can think of several much better rounds.... but in a AR 10 or short coal length action limited to 2.800. I see the appeal vs say a 7mm/08 or 308.... and the bullet abilities over say a 6mm or 143... but there are far better 6.5s in my worthless opinion

Well I have been watching this one and finally just have to put my thoughts in. Yes I do believe there is a ton of hype around the 6.5CM, and it can kill elk, has killed lots of them. But is it really the be all / end all to our needs? Is it really a viable elk round? Under ideal circumstances, yes. But what about when circumstances are not ideal? Then the answer is no. A broadside shot at 100 yards? 300 yards...yes. A quartering to shot at any range...no. So I think the true responsibility falls on the shooter.
I have on two instances seen hunters show up in Texas after Nilgai with the 6.5CM. They were flat out told to leave the gun and use the guides gun. For one of those hunters, the Nilgai dance was 4 shots with a 300 Win Mag before the beast was down. Nilgai are tough beyond belief, but honestly can give away 200 - 300 lbs to a bull elk.
I always go back to some sage advise given to me long ago by a very wise and successful hunter who has long since passed from this world. Match your caliber and range to the game intended, so that you can make a vital shot from any angle...because you never know when some unforeseen variable will materialize on your first shot, and you may need to make a second shot under the worst possible circumstances. Been there, done that.
That said, I shoot a 340 Wby for nearly all my hunting, and it has never let me down. My wife shoots a 300 WSM for her caliber of choice. Yes, recoil was an issue for both of us, but just like putting the pads on the first week of football practice in high school, when everything just seems to hurt. Practice will allow you to overcome the recoil, if you can't, step down in caliber.
Now before I'm chastised for my choice of magnums. I also feel that using a 30-06, with 180's at 2700 to be perfectly acceptable for elk, just mind your range and choice of bullet. Same goes for a 340, a 300 and a bazooka.

Well no sh** sherlock, you gave someone a gun they had never shot before and that kicks 3-4x as much as their normal rifle does and sent them out with it... I'm frankly just impressed they took it down at all.

As for compared to a 6.5x47 Lapua or a .260 Remington? You handload, right? Doesn't that sort of null-out your argument about factory ammo? Actually, nobody said anything about factory ammo, so why is that even being brought up? That is LITERALLY the only argument the 6.5CM supporters have left at this point, other than the shorter OAL. The rest has been completely disproven. If you handload, you should be able to put whatever bullets and powder you want into any case, and for a lot cheaper than ANY factory ammo of any type or cartridge, right? Therefore, if you handload, and you don't fly to your hunting location, the factory ammo argument is out the window.
If people want to shoot it, go for it...More power to them. But use it within its means, and within your skills. If you can't get within a close enough distance to properly place your shot with enough energy to kill your game, don't pull the trigger! It's that simple. But when hunters are under-gunned, and/or over-distance for their skills, and they're losing or wounding animals, that is unethical hunting! Not to mention that it makes us all look bad to the non-hunters, the Fudds, and the anti-gunners! It just gives them more ammo to use against us and our sport.

I'd say 500y for elk 600y for deer. Maybe a bit more if you are feeling good about the shot. I'm in the shop now but can run some numbers later.

Haha - whatevs bro...I don't know you from adam, but you say some crazy stuff and seem to contradict yourself. I guess I expected a little more out of a guy in the bullet making business. Since you are being super generous with the 3100fps velocity in the 7mm08, lets be equally generous with the 6.5 creedmoor and give it a little more velocity than 2700 fps. Then lets run those ballistics. Go back and read your comments bro - i don't agree with a lot of opinions on here, but most guys are consistant in there beliefs. You are all over the place.

Keep drinking the cool-aid if you want, the creedmoor probably has one of the best marking strategies that's ever come across this sport, and like many great marketing strategies, it's riddled with bs. It's too bad that they didn't actually make a better cartridge and bring something new to the market. Something similar to the 260ai would have been awesome.
