What does "safe" mean?

morning, Alex Wheeler u need to learn how to read, and lose the
hot head attitude. myself and mudrunner concur on the habits of
hand loading. these r our experiences with hand loading. we r not
suggesting people follower our practices. in some instances we
r referring to our problems that have happened to us.
u really have a bad attitude. people read our comments
about our experiences when hand loading. hopefully they
read, read, read and learn from our and others good and bad experiences.

I have a question and in no way want to get into a flame out.. How does velocity not tell you when you have exceeded a safe threshold of pressure when it is pressure that propels the bullet down the barrel.. the more pressure the higher the velocity.. Yes I understand powder lots vary. So if lot "A" gives 3000 FPS with a 60gr charge, and lot "B" give 3150 with the same charge then I am going to assume that lot "B" needs to be brought down until my velocity drops back to around 3000.. Same pressure, different burn. Then again when I change powder lots I would back down 5% and worked back to my known safe velocity.. I am trying to have a respectful debate and understand opinions differ.. Another great thing about this country I love..
Take care
Ed

Ed,
Bore dimensions. Bore diameter, groove diameter, land width and shape, lead angle, ext. Pressure peaks early on in the bullets travel, engraving force of the bullet coupled with bore dimensions can play a large role in how quick and high that peak happens. Some barrels will show pressure signs at lower velocities than others because of this. Its peak pressure that shows these signs. If you can keep the peak pressure down you can add powder and increase the total pressure across the whole curve which will increase velocity.

Sorry, I will work on my reading skills. My attitude is fine if left alone. I will be forced to react if called names like hypocrite or hot head. So maybe leave me be and I'll leave you be?

There was nothing safe or reliable about what you bragged about. Proper reloading techniques and working up slowly watching for pressure signs would have prevented your problems. Never have I over pressured a case to the point of the primer falling out, then claim that I backed off .5 grain and run them there. Does that seem like good advice? The biggest reason I thought you should not give advise is not because of one accident but the fact you though a case head separation supported in the chamber was caused from pressure. But there was a very good reason for your over pressure, even if its unknown to you. Tens of thousandths of rounds are fired over saami spec every year in competition, over pressures are not normal or even common.
:rolleyes::rolleyes: You read 1 post of mine, and came to that conclusion... You must be the most intuitive person on earth.

People in glass houses should not throw stones...

If you want to be left alone, then I'd suggest not being a FNG in a new place and start off the name calling like "dangerous", and saying that you would recommend that nobody ever listen to any advice I have to give. Doesn't matter if you're 18 or 80, it doesn't bode well for making friends, when you're a new guy, and you start stepping on toes as soon as you walk through the door. It's just a matter of tact and respect.

If you'd like to start over, I will accept an apology as an olive branch, and we can move on in peace, and I will quit antagonizing you over your previously ill-informed remarks regarding me or my reloading safety level.

Alex is FAR from a new guy and I'd suggest really reading what he has cause there is a lot of knowledge gained through experience behind it which packs a lot of weight in the shooting community outside the internet!!!

New to the site...Not necessarily to the sport. It's like the first time you walk into another man's house, you don't just go opening his fridge without asking permission. It's just a matter of showing respect...Whether he thinks I'm an idiot or not...That's his own personal opinion, and he has a right to it. I'm pretty sure you and Feenix both feel the same way about me, too...But that's your opinion. I'm not some professional shooter, so I don't have any fancy sponsorships or world records to fall back on, I don't have my own shop, any sort of notoriety in the real world, or even a job or any money right now. But that hasn't stopped me from trying to help other folks on here, instead of insulting people.

I'm sure he is as well known in the community as you and he says, I've never questioned that, because I don't know him, therefore I haven't drawn any conclusions as to his legitimacy or not. I do joke when people say the term "local pro's" because, we ALL know those local folks that people call a "pro" that really don't know much of anything, but just have a big ego. I was not referring to anyone on this site as such.

Alex, thanks for the very understandable explanation. I definitely understand that each rifle barrel is a unique as the person shooting the rifle. My thoughts with using velocity as a measure of pressure is with the same rifle, same components, working towards a known safe velocity, (according to pressure test receivers), and seeing a velocity spike, which would lead me to believe a safe pressure level has been exceeded.. Peak pressure will definitely vary from a medium rate to a slow rate powder. Thats why I try to use the slowest burn rate powder that gives the best returns on velocity.. Once again Thanks for the explanation..
I got no more...:)
Thanks
Ed

I for one would like to get back to the "Friendly and Informative" site that this used to be. We are all passionate about shooting sports and all that it encompasses, but getting venomous and adversarial, is not in the best Interest of the site and its benefits. I for one will try to be more respectful and reap the benefits.

I have been a member of many sites that this adversarial atmosphere
was the norm and they did not help the new guys that needed help. These sites were full of guys with great credentials and believed that they were the experts and that everyone with a different opinion was un informed or just plain stupid So I decided to move on and allow more of these type of people to occupy that space.

I like this site and hope that it does not become one of those "Other" sites. As long as I have been on this site I have never felt the need to Ignore anyone. Just because they have disagreed with me. I have gotten upset when personal shots were taken at me and tried not to respond in the same way (But I have Invited several to come to my house and say that to my face) But after a cool down period and reflection I decided to move on.

I can only hope this site remains that type of site with the emphasis
on sharing each persons opinion and expertise.

Do I hear an Amen ?
