I have a Chrony Model F-1 that is pretty old and I believe reads slow. Just wondered what a good upgrade would be. Thanks for any advice

I don't use one anymore. I now sight in at 100 or 200 yards depending on cal., then shoot at 600 getting the exact number of come up clicks it takes to sight in at 600. After that it's going to a good balistic program adjusting the bullet speed to get the number to match. It has served me much better then the crony I used to use. Hope this helps.

I use the magneto speed chronograph and is one that I would highly recommend. Unlike your shooting chrony it doesn't rely on light it uses a magnetic field.

I've found the superchrono to be the least fuss option there is, just take it out of yor pack and put it on the ground. No screens, no tripods. Weighs nothing and reads EVERY shot perfect. I know have two for comparison but they are perfect. Also easy to put out at range for establishing true BC.
I keep one in my range pack.

I will never bother with anything else.

Agree with the guys above it's going to be hard to beat the magneto speed. I've wasted hundreds of bullets, many pounds of powder, and lots of barrel life messing around with the shooting cronys trying to get a good, accurate reading. With the magneto speed, it will work any time of time wether it's bright and sunny or cloudy.

The upper end like the Magneto Speed are very good products. I have two, CED M II and Chrony Beta Master. I like them both and they are in close agreement. I too started with the original Shooting Chrony (before the F1!) and it helped a bunch.

Spend what you can and get the best. Each has good and bad points but they all work. Skyscreens can be shot through and accuracy, POI and velocity checked at once. The Magneto potentially changes the bullet impact. The Superchrono doesn't measure subsonic. Skyscreens are environment sensitive and I have taped the uprights to cast a shadow over the sensor slots to get a reading. Magneto Speed and Super Chrono are pretty hassle free.

I have three rules:
1) Get a Chronograph.
2) Spend as much as you reasonably can.
3) Learn to use it with all it's idiosyncrasies.

Got a magneto spreed and have no complaints. Although my beta chrony worked well for years. It just read about 50 fps slow.

Until I got the Magnetspeed the weak link in the load development process was easily and consistently getting an accurate velocity with optical chronographs.

magneto speed hands down.the ammo i have wasted on missed shots.this will work completee dark.tried it to see if it worked .the wasted bullets and shoots will pay for itself.
