What to do next Rem7mm mag help

I have started to get into the addictive world of long range hunting and shooting and have come to a point where I would like some more advice from those that have been there and done that, and that are overall more experienced.

I will list the current set up I have and then would like to know what everyone else would do in my situation. My overall goal is to have a rifle that I can confidently shoot game (elk/deer) out to (max) 1000 yards.

For my next purchase I was thinking of the Swarovski EL 10x42 range finder/binoculars combo that runs about $3k, however, I am hesitant to pull the trigger (ha ha) on the purchase because I am wondering if there is another purchase that should take priority given my current set up, and the direction it should go.

What I have/ have done so far....

Remington 700, 7mm Mag BDL, Walnut stock. (everything is factory).

Barrel is free floated, done by me. Gun shoots 3/4 MOA at a 100 yrds. (factory barrel, but it is good).

Up graded the scope to a 5.5 x 22 x 56 Nightforce, with MOAR.

I still need rings and proper long action rail (suggestions?).

I invested in the Nightforce Xball ballistics program.

I have a Harris Bi pod, a good back pack and that's about it.


So what do the experts think? in a priority list? Stock?, barrel?, reloading equipment? optics? I just want some advice on where I should spend some money next? If this is your set up and you had $4k to put into it what would you do next?

I would start shooting.And then I would shoot somemore.And after that I would try to get some trigger time.
Until you have shot alot don't rush to spend money.The bino/rangefinder combo is a great piece that you can use no matter what direction you decide to go with the rifle.
The factory gun will shoot better than you can for awhile.Practice and then decide what you need//want.
And remembr to have fun.Try to take someone with you.That way is way more fun.

If it were my setup, which, I am by no means an expert...This is simply just my opinion on what I would do, and how my build would be.

You already have the 700 action, and the NF scope I would pick...So, if I had an extra $4K after buying those 2 things here's how my setup would look...

700 action - trued and blueprinted by my smith

Barrel - Rock Creek 5R 7mm 1:9 stainless blank, Sendero contour, 28" finished length, w/ 11* recessed match crown, and chambered to 7mmSTW. Break the barrel in, and then have it melonited for extra barrel longevity.

Stock - JP Enterprises Benchrest chassis

Trigger - Jewell set to 1lb, on the nose.

Base - EGW 20MOA base

Rings - TPS TSR 30mm Medium height

I already hand-load, but since you don't, I would take what's left I would invest in a good reloading setup. I use the RCBS Rock Chucker Supreme single-stage press for precision and simplicity, RCBS ChargeMaster 1500, and some good dies and good brass (Nosler).

Then I would get out there and get my perfect load developed, and start practicing at some distance, once I got my load perfected.

That's just what I would do, I'm sure others will have different opinions, but that's what makes us all free-thinking individuals.

We can all post our ideas but only you can really determine what your current rifle is capable of. In my opinion your current equipment is satisfactory, however my preference for elk at 1000 would be a little heavier caliber. Develop your load make sure its one that it still has enough velocity to expand at 1000 yards. Find 1000 yard range work your way out to 1000 and shoot (lots), I use a 12 inch square gong, I prefer gongs reactive properties over paper at distances . If you find your gun is capable by all means get the leica binos however you might find that you need to split that money on a standard leica range finder, decent pair of binos, and some rifle mods.

Personally a brake and a br7 range finder. Maybe a bedding job just for saftey sake or better yet an hs then when u decide on a different caliber/ wear that barrel out have it blueprinted and bedded

Thank you for all the replies. I typically tend to get consumed by a new interest and want to make sure that I am not overlooking a key element when it comes to equipment and my set up.

I don't want to do things twice, for example get a good manners or equivalent stock with my factory sporter barrel, then later have to get another stock to accommodate the new heavier barrel, or invest in a good reloading set up for my 7mm Mag only to upgrade to a larger caliber later. I have been doing a lot of reading and researching to try and get a clear direction with the project.

Anyway for now I think I will get the nightforce scope mounted with a good base and rings from NF, and shoot with the gun, and factory ammo as it is for this season (wood stock factory barrel etc.) After hunting season is over I think I will use the 700 action that I have and move up to a 338 edge and start reloading, invest in a good stock and barrel.

Im not set on this, but this is the direction that I am leaning. Thanks for all the advice and ideas it is much appreciated.

Yep I was thinking that I would go that route? (7MM STW)Since I already have a 7MM Rem Mag and wanted to get into reloading. I posted it here because I wanted some insight from the STW guys.
