measureing out a rifle for oal length
tried to different tipped bullets .
in order to fix magazine it needs to less than 3.541 ( which is very tight )

lands for the hornady gmx250grn length is 3.992 = jump of .451
lands for the barnes LRX 270 grn length is 3.929 = jump of .388

plus there is the amount that is seated into the case , add that they are longer for weight due to all copper . it puts alot of bullet inside the case , taking up case space

so im am gonna guess this cartridge is meant for very heavy round nose bullets where the ogive is farther forward ???

i was thinking lathing the tips off, which would , but id rather find something that was factory

It was designed in 1912 to shoot 300 gr. round nose bullets and function through a M98 action. It was meant to be a large medium bore capable of taking the biggest African dangerous game. Plastic tipped all copper bullets weren't even on H&H's radar (radar hadn't been invented I guess) and kissing the lands wasn't likely high on their agenda either.

I'd recommend seating the bullet to the limits of the magazine box and shooting them. Most .375 H&H's shoot pretty well, I know mine does. It's not a 1000 yd benchrest round, it's meant for killing big stuff that can eat you.

Dusty, Generally....the Barnes Bullets like a lot of set-back off of the lands. At .388", you're probably close to the "sweet-spot"! One of the beautiful things about the "tipped" bullets ....don't get battered (flattened) in the magazine. When I was shooting Hornady 270 SP's in my AI, by the time I got to the last round in the magazine... the bullet point looked like the base of a flat-base .17 caliber! memtb

Nice post!
Most guys try to get reasonable accuracy with a dangerous game load so that means no bullet movement in the magazine. That usually means a heavy crimp.

I was lucky enough that my Caprivi liked a 270 Barnes TSX in the crimp groove with a healthy dose of R15 and would do 3 shots under 1" with a 6x Swarovski

One of the things my PH did was to have the guys shoot targets and then check the mag for bullets moving in the mag. When we are using these big boys in dangerous situations, reliability and repeatability are more important than the last 10th of an inch of grouping. When the hippo came into camp at 3am I had a lot of confidence in the fact that I knew it would fire 3 rounds and not worry that the gun would jam with bullets moving.

I love the big bores and use them for what they were intended. Would I want to shoot 140 rounds in an f-class match with one? I am too old and not enough of a man to do that.

However the Cape Buff did not know that

i know this this wasnt meant to be a laser beam , but if i can get it shooting exceptional rather than good. itll be worth the effort . just trying to find something a little more blunt on the nose, i called barnes said i can pull the tips out which would probably get me .200 closer , or just go with the tsx or another

3/8 of an inch, probably has 6 or 12 sweet spots along the way

Excellent
Just remember a heavy crimp.
375HH are fun to use. I am a smaller guy and find them easy to shoot with their slower recoil than say a 300!win mag. I have a 275 lb buddy who does not roll with the recoil but is a solid lump and has to absorb it. He has taken 3 shots with mine and won't touch it. The beauty of our hobby is that their is something for all us.

Keep me posted on your results

Don't worry about the seating depth because as some have said, it was designed for heavy spritzer bullet with standard Ojive or round nose bullets. Also most bullets have a cannelure for crimping, but this is more to prevent the bullets from moving in the magazine from recoil of the fired round. Some times It does help improve accuracy Though.

These rifles can be very accurate if loaded with the right bullet and loaded to mag length minus .020 to .030 thousandths.

They also need some jump to properly engrave properly. Most large bore rifles have 6 or 8 grove barrels because of bullet weight and starting inertia.

Big bore rifles are intended for short range, but will perform with great accuracy at ranges beyond 5 or 600 yards. They also seem to work best with flat based bullets for shorter yardage and boat tail bullets for longer distance.

With good loading, they can achieve sub 1/4 MOA groups and normally have very good SDs. The only down side to them seems to be Ballistic coefficient with most bullets, but you have to be shooting long distances to benefit from these bullets.

If you want to use Polymer tipped bullets, you can take a razor blade and cut the tip off at the nose of the jacket an shorten the COAL without effecting the bullet weight very much and not effect the expansion of the bullet design. (I would not recommend pulling the tip because then it would go from a pointed to a hollow point bullet and could change the way it expands and would change the weight enough that it could effect velocity.

Cutting the tip is not a new practice, It was done for many years with lead tipped bullets that would get easily damaged. Now this practice is called "Protected point" if bullets are made this way.
