Yup, the missing link is here.. the .012 incremental caliber between .284 and .308
.296 So far there's are 2 bbl manufacturers to be making bbls, McGowan and Broughton
by contract of Macs Gunworks in WY
I know they are testing them with a necked up SAUM cartridge.
Some will say waste of money, blah, blah, blah, why not just a .30 yap, yap, yap,
I say awh go sit on the porch.
The heaviest bullet so far is 198gr& has a 15cal ogive a 9 degree x .220 boat tail (cup and core)
and is 1.515 in length with a .060 meplat, anyone care to guess the BC? please...

I'll bite.....What's the BC?

Also, just out of curiosity, why would you make a gap filler between the 7mm and .30 cals? They're so close alteady...

The BC is not a Quiz, I was asking, lol.
.296 fills the gap just like 6.5 fills the gap between .257 and .277

smells like a good thing to do to a shot out 7mm when you don't really want to go 30... run a button through her, adjust the chamber slightly for new neck dimension, and neck up your brass for the new pills..... I'd guess the pill you mentioned to be in the .600 range for bc. but I'm in the if it's pointy it flies crowd so I really am not the perfect person to answer this.....

hey guys, we have 24 cal., 25 cal, 26 cal, 27 cal, 28 cal, and now 29 CALIBER. Im trying the ultra short action and calling it the 290 USA. Running 198 grainers at 2900 FPS. It shoots bug holes at 100 yards and 4" groups at a grand. I figure the BC on the 198s set .660 or better. i've fired nearly 800 rounds since October. Since its so fun to shoot, this baby slaps steel and probably the same on big game I can't wait to try it. matrix Ballistics for bullets, macs gunworks for rifles and barrels.
ps macs gunworks builds a precision action that fit these short mag cartridges oh ya!
trying it on 7 mag case next, calling it the 290 mag. gun)

IMO, it's boring and silly without bullets..
Again my opinion; we don't need 23, 25, 27, or 29cals(odd cals), because we have all the best bullets in 22, 24, 26, 28, and 30cal(even cals).

I get a G1BC under ICAO conditions and 2900fps for that bullet as described = .672
10tw needed

so you don't think we need 25~06 or the 270 win? we do have bullets 180 , 190 &198gr from matrix Ballistics in .296 cal. 198s@ 2900 witha BC of .660+ with 63 gr and nearly 2 tons of energy @ the muzzle .Bbl wear should be minimal, = more shooting:))

The only thing really boring about this cartridge and bullet is suffering through a number of beatings before you can one up it!

Marshall, if I could have one recommendation, and Ron and I have discussed it, the need for a higher bc, longer bullet, 205-210gr. Maybe even 215.

The bullet does well, and even transitioned well into subsonic, I witnessed two consecutive hits at 2075 yards. My 7mm Berger 180 hybrid was shooting a 15 foot group.

My limiting factor on weight is the availability of jacket lengths, the 198 is designed with that in mind.
I've been able to spank them of a 7rem case at 3028fps with no signs of pressure....accurately.
judging by the fact every drives a different vehicle, there is room for more flavors of calibers.

sorry to be a party pooper Ron, but the reamers cleary says "290 Ambrose" :)

Re: The missing link .296 cal.

Hey guys if interested, Mcgowen Precision builds the .296 bbls but they only sell to Mac's gunworks. Broughton also builds bbls & those can be orderd direct.gun)

Re: The missing link .296 cal.

l received my new 7mm mag brass today. Bullets, dies, reamer, stock, action, scope everything except the barrel to start the .290 mag build. The barrels should be here any day.I can't wait to try out the HS detach mag.on this beast. :)gun):D
