That's the main reason I don't do steel; the weight difference, also.
Along the same lines: bought some Warne rimfire rings recently for my 9422, thinking the "3/4" horizontal split or the halves would give a nice clean look. Duh. Didn't think about how one is supposed to fit a 220-or-so degree circle over a 180 degree radius. Oh, you must snap the upper ring half over your scope tube, in my case the scope a brand-new Leupold. No thanks.
As for steel rings: with today's manufacturing technology and ever-improving Al alloys (plus peoples' urge to over-tighten rings on increasingly-expensive scopes), I see no need to ever buy steel again.
