Scope mount screws

On a Remington 700 when mounting the base on action with talley rings do the long or short screws go to the muzzle end?

Usually the shorter screws go on the front because the hit the barrel. Put the crews in the bases and see how far they stick out the bottom. Try them both ways and see if any bottom out before the mount is tight, if they do then that is the wrong screw.
Clean the action holes to remove any oil, most put a little blue loctite, then torque to Talley specs.

Shortest screws to the front so they don't bottom out on the barrel or interfere with the lugs.

Just make sure you use a torque wrench on them.

Put one in at a time and check if it bottomed out. Take it out and do the next one.
