So I've wanted a number 1 for years. Growing up one of my fathers friends had one in 22-250 that he coyote hunted with. I always thought it was one of the coolest guns. A few years ago I converted my 25-06 over to a 280ai and I've missed having a 25-06 in my safe.
3 days ago I was looking for a local smith and stumbled upon a local hunting / shooting forum. Well what do you know, local guy had a number 1 chambered in 25-06 for sale. One irresponsible decision later and I'm now the proud owner of a 1971 Number 1 with an older 6-18 red field scope.
Scoped the barrel, buttload of copper first 12-14" but other than that it looked pretty dang good for being over 50 years old. Took 2 hours this morning to clean all the copper out. Went out to the shop and loaded up 4 rounds (luckily I still have 50 pieces of win brass stashed away). But….I gave away my 25-06 dies. So I used my 257 Wby dies to seat the 115 bergers .020 off the lands over 51 grn H4831sc. Completely random load, never used that powder for 25-06, but I see lots of people do so I figured why not.
Shot a fouler and then 3 more. All 4 fell within .75", with the 3 last shots just over 1/2". Not bad in my opinion for a 50 year old rifle and random load!
