After more years than 50 of hunting and 10 years of hunting PA bears finely harvested one the last day at 1035 yards. Wasn't real big around 185# according to the Game Commission. But I was happy.

Congratulations!

What area of PA were you hunting?
We hunted in the Bennezette area. Not a single sign of recent activity.
They were already denned up.

WOW Congrats!!!!!
Will make a nice Head/Rug mount for sure. Would like to have it in our Game Room.
You can get some good meat off of this one.
What area of PA and rifle/cartridge/scope did you use?
Need to post your story!
I hunted bears behind our house when I was young and they were mostly under 300#s. Lived in BEAR CREEK, PA.

I was hunting Cambia County just outside of Johnstown Pennsylvania. The rifle I used was 408/338 ChyTec (.338 Big Baer) smithed by Bruce Baer of Willow Hill PA. Bartleine barrel left hand twist, gain twist, 1/10" to 1/9.25". Bullet 300 grain Elite Hunter @3135fps. Nightforse Actar 7X35X56 F2

I believe I heard the roar of that old beast if it was the shot fired by the huge powerline crossing Rager Mt...

Congratulations on the bear and the shot.
The memories will remain with you always.
I have one of Bruces 338 Big Baers built on an old Howard Wolfe 3 lug action. For many years it had been a 30x378.
I just wanted it rebarreled, but Bruce talked me into the Big Baer.
Actually, he had showed me the 338 difference years earlier when we met up at a hunting location. lol
My barrel is a 34" 10 twist with no taper in a barrel block setup.
Needless to say its a heavy gun, requiring a good shooting platform.
My load is 137 gr. H50BMG with the 300 gr SMK.
My velocity is very close to what you are getting @ 3250.
Of coarse pretty much all Pa. long range hunting is done from fixed locations that are at least fairly accessible by vehicle.
Id be curious as others might be also as to your shooting setup while your hunting long range with your gun?
Gun weight? Bench? Tripod? Type of rest?
Also type of optics your using for glassing?

Here are some pictures of my setup. The bench isn't my design it's made out of aluminum and weighs about 28# the rifle weighs about 20# . If we have to backpack in I use the rifle tripod it weighs about 8#. For glasses I use Leica spotters in an aluminum frame and Bushnell Spacemasters

Well thanks for posting those pics.
Pretty much what i expected to see, and pretty typical of what many use in Pa.
It appears that the bench top rotates?
It also appears that the tripod setup might be made by (the ultimate tripod) in Blairsville Pa?
As for the glasses, again very typical Pa. setup.
The old Bushnell Spacemasters have for decades been by far the most popular.
Did Bruce have any influence on your choice of Leicas?
If you were to venture a bit further north, you would find some differences in the shooting rest many are using.
