Have the itch for another rifle - probably my last one and looking for thoughts. Western style long range rifle for free range Texas Elk (have taken total 6-7 animals average 400 yards, Texas Aoudads - 400-yard, Free range Eland, and Gemsbok. Planning on a Mexico Sendero Mule Deer this fall. I reload for everything, so wildcats are not a problem. Would prefer not to fire-form brass due to time and expense of that process. Looking for something in the 280AI to 300 PRC calibers.

Budget?

Seekins Havak Element

Or Rbros?

Just because I like to swim upstream...

And I am not traditionally a supporter of most things Nosler...

The 28 Nosler will provide you with the velocity and energy required for most anything that walks the North American continent. The best part of this suggestion is the availability of Peterson brass instead of that awful Nosler product. And it's on sale!

Now ADG has the 28 Nosler brass available as well:

I use the Badlands 7mm Super SD2 bullets in the 150 gr. weight. The performance of this bullet is amazing.

Look at some of the ballistic data available:

If you choose the Badlands 150 gr. you will work with your gunsmith on the leade and throat length. Simple adjustments.

Enjoy the process!

If related cartridges weren't a pita in AR's, I'd have a 284 rather than a 7-08. Not sure why some have this issue in AR's? I'm also not a 7mil fan, but own a 7-08 AR. Just almost complete as need a few more items to complete.

300 wsm. It just set a 1000 yard group record. Perfect size, right in your range. I have 900 208 gr amax sitting, waiting for it. But after my 33 Nosler is done.
Unless you have to do a LA. Then a 7 prc or 7 sst with a 7T, and shoot a 160 gr SBD2.
The wsm's, 7mag, 7prc and 6.5/7 sst are all there in that light mag category. IMO the sweet spot for hunting.
More preformance, the 27 Nosler 7T and shoot a 150 gr SBD2(.71 g1 bc) at 3200-3250 fps. I really like the possibilities of this. Here's what AB says ballistics should be at 1000 ft of altitude, 3196 fps. 50°,50%RH, 29.9 baro.
That's all the ballistic performance of the big 33 calibers with 1100+ #'s less muzzle energy/recoil while retaining plenty of energy to 1000 yards.
