Enough Federal GMM 190s to burn a barrel.

I can chamber the barrel and cut/thread the muzzle for the brake, but I don't do furniture.

I never had a true custom built rifle other than 4 double lugged 14 types that I had made built from components including unchambered barrels.

Having said all that, I commissioned benchrest gunsmith to do the whole package with me witnessing the whole process. He agreed and set up the time frame.

One of my mentors in chambering barrels, Mike Bryant, will do the project. This is a continuing education for me. Truly excited.

Very nice setup!! What do think it will weigh? You had a great opportunity to observe the GS. This rifle will really have some special meaning to you for a long time. Keep us posted on journey.

Thank you for asking about the weight. I almost forgot to weigh all the components. Here you go, should be close to it, give and take oz+, when you consider metal taken out when lopping off 1 inch from the belled out muzzle, chambering, then add the bedding compound.

Mike has been great to me. He gave me lessons when he trued up one of my 700 LAs before the pandemic. We arrived at his shop after lunch, he worked on it till dark, stopping to explan the hows and the whys; from facing off the receiver, chasing the threads, facing off the lug abutments, squaring the bolt face and lugs. The education included the set up, special tooling, and lathe set ups

All that stoppage extended the completion.

The plan on this 300WM is start first thing in the morning; chamber, thread muzzle for brake, then bed. Cure bedding overnight. Clean up and assemble 24 hours later.

Time permitting we may hit the range and test with FGMM 190s.

Well, the build is done.

We made it to Wheeler, TX Sunday early evening, dropped off the parts and headed to the motel. Went back Monday at 0800 at Mike's shop. He started right away and finished the chamber and timed the Ti Pro 3 (3/4x24) at about 1130.

We went on a long lunch and came back at around 1330. Inletted the barrel channel to accommodate the M40 Bartlein CW 10T barrel. Then proceeded to bed the rifle.

As the rifle was set on the bedding and started to cure, he started on another rifle for an out of state customer. He finished and boxed it by 1700.

He cleaned up and grabbed a 223 bolt gun and a 22LR bolt gun and he took us to their family 3000 acre spread to shoot some Prairie dogs. There weren't any for the most as he dumped some 500 pounds of stuff in those holes to eradicate them. This is the icing of the trip, 1st time for me shoot at pdogs. I did not expect the treat.

He drove us around till we found one. Shot it. Drove some more and shot a couple more. That was about the dogs we found.

Today's picture at Mike's 100 yard range, he has 200 yard range as well in his backyard, but did not use it. We were just interested in getting rough zero before we embark on a 8 hour drive back.. Boresighted, fired a round, gross adjustment, fried a round. Then adjust for the middle, fired 3 rounds. Cooled down handed the rifle to my friend, adjusted for center. He fired one round on another target. Total of 6 rounds from FGMM 190 SMKs, no cleaning. Set the zero stop and packed.

It was a great trip

Now, back at the house.

The finished rifle is awesone, a truly custom with all the right components done by one of the best benchrest gunsmiths in the country. Plus, it appears it wants to shoot. However, I am not sure whether my handloads can best the FGMM. It will be another journey for this trigger monkey as he aspires to be a hunter and learn more about the game he intends to harvest.

Really GOOD Informative Post.
Nice Rig!
Now you have to get some chips on that new PM Lathe with the lessons learned.

Also there's nothing "just…." About the .300 Winnie. Long live the .300 win mag! I don't know for sure what I believe about "inherently accurate" cartridges…and it is almost a religious question haha…,but if pressed I'd say the .300 win mag is one of them, in defiance of what is said about its short neck, superfluous belt, overall length issues, etc.:.

Factory ammo, nonetheless. Good enough for me

Yes, thank you. Learned a few tricks. He works fast, but precise, not sure for myself whether I can attain that kind of speed in chambering. Nor, would I want to be for being just a hobbyist.
