Ok I'm shooting a Remington sendero. Im shooting the 190gr nosler ab long range. Accuracy wise I can't complain at all, it will touch holes at 100. But the wound channel is very unimpressive!
We killed 5 deer with this load this season ranging from 200-700 yards. All of them only went 20 yards max but the entrance and exit hole was horrible. 4 of the 5 were heart shots and the bullet entered the leg (breaking it) but still barely an exit wound...and little blood trail.
My only concern is what it one of those shots wouldn't of been as good, how hard would it be to find the deer or would we even loose the deer with the lack of wound channel and blood trail

I'm looking for suggestions for different bullets and loads to try. I'm looking for something that is accurate out to 800yards and has a good exit wound! I'm used to exit wounds the size of a baseball or more from my RUM's

Thanks
Cj

If your 5 for 5 with not a big loss of meat due to bullet fragmentation and the deer only went 20 yds, don't think a blood trail was to big of a issue, lot of times when you immediately stop the heart the blood flow stops also, sounds like the nosler ablr's gave you your moneys worth, use bergers myself but based on your comments on the 190's I wouldn't be afraid to use them either, congrats on the truckload of meat you brought home & nice shooting on a 700 yd harvest if the animal only traveled 20yds and expired

It was a fun season. My buddy actually used my gun for the 700 yarder...she made it about 10 feet.
They definitely did the job, I'm probably just over thinking things

Weird, I shot 4 white tails with this bullet this year. I thought if anything they were a little too explosive. First one about 150 slightly quartering toward me. Forgot to hold low and hit a little high. Hit heavy bone and almost blew her in two. Next 370 baseball exit. Next about 250, softball exit. Last about 500, baseball exit. All bang dead no flop. 95 hrs Retumbo, fed 215, hbn coated. Sounds like Nosler may have some consistency issues between lots.

ive heard a lot of talk in the last couple of years of people killing game but they are disappointed when they don't see huge holes blown out of the animal. im not sure todays high BC bullets designed for optimum flight are going to perform like the old A Frame or core lokt. personally I have no issue with a well placed bullet spending its energy within the vitals. if its the big wound your looking for, then maybe change bullet and see how they do.

I will say this, if using this bullet in a RUM, make sure you hit nothing bigger than a rib if within point blank range for sure. I would not use this bullet on elk at RUM velicities.

Depending on your load and barrel contour you might try the 180 Accubond for a little more velocity, or the 200 grain ballistic tip for more expansion. You are in the right bullet weight range based on powder capacity and performance. (180 to 200 grain bullets are optimum in the 300 RUM).

Can you elaborate? Via the elk I mean?

Are there any other proven long range loads/bullets for the rum? I would like to play around with it this year to find my absolute best load for my gun

Thanks guys

Try the 215 Berger. I've shot hundreds through my 300 rum. So many my barrel is done and I'm changing it over to a Edge. Try them 30 thou off with H1000 or Retumbo. Fed GM215M primer. Deer don't go far when hit with the 215 from my experience.

I have been using the Hornady 212 grain ELD-X bullets in my 300 Rum. Accuracy is definitely not an issue. With that being said I can not speak to the performance on game at longer ranges yet. My one bull elk that I harvested this year was taken at 69 yards. He dropped right in his tracks though, which I was pleased about.

In my opinion, anything less than 200 grains in a RUM is a waste of powder, bullets, brass and time. I will also recommend the 215 Berger. I have shot a lot of deer with them over the last few years and I have found that when I get an exit wound, it's pretty good size and if the deer doesn't drop, it's usually easy to follow the blood trail. I like to shoot the shoulder and when I do my part, the bullet doesn't always exit but the deer have never taken another step. Ever. Heart, lungs, etc, yes they will run but they are running dead. Mine is a 700 with a 28" Brux barrel and I use H1000. I have used the 215's in 3 different RUMs and they were accurate in all 3.

I run the 225eldm in my 300 norma so its simular. Havent had this firearm for long but its killed one red deer at 130y went about 40y then fell down a slip and the other was a medium bull tahr at 800y straight on shot and bang flopped him of his look out rock. I know the guy who shoots this sister gun has switched to the 215vld.
