I'm on the quest of building a laser that bucks the wind, keeps energy, is generally fur friendly and allows you to hold fur to 400yds with a 6" MPBR. I'm building a 22-243ai fast twist with plans to push a 70gn .5 bc mono at 3800!

Anyone neck down their 243ai's and what was your experience?

The brand of brass you're using and the length of your barrel will have a lot to do with if that velocity is doable. But you prob already know that.

What barrel length? Tell us more about the rig please :)

7.5 twist 26" #4 shillen on a Tikka action. Going to run a suppressor so the 28 or 30 just seem a little too obnoxiously long haha. My buddy has a 22x55 Swede and he can get there.. bit more case capacity.

I've heard some discussions that the 243 "improved" Redding S dies may be different than "ackley imp" chambers… I'll probably order and try anyway. For my 243ai, I just used a Lee collet and shoulder bump. I can't figure a better way to neck down to .224 other than trying the S dies.

I will be running ladder in next couple days on .243 and 55HH. I fully expect north of 4K with Varget. My guess is 4239. 😂

@Calvin45 any "educated" guesses?
i need barrel length, brass headstamp, the temperature outside, the temperature on the moon, and the full details on what you had for breakfast before I can make an educated guess

As for uneducated…4240 (I watched price is right as a kid, one higher than yours 😝)

Back to the op…who the heck has a .500 bc 70 grain .224"? Flatline?
Sorry more a generic statement to the 70-75gn class of mono bullets. PVA Seneca; Cayuga; Badlands bullets all in the high .4 to .5+ g1 bc. When you run the math they can if pushed fast enough they can keep that MPBR 6" diameter to 400 w/o bleeding off at 350. Kind of a silly endeavor, but a fun one. Most my presssure dogs hang up outside of 400, give you time to range etc. Inside of 400 you can generally tell they are plenty close, and I want to just hold center, flop. Yes - this can be done with a vanilla 22-250 w/50's at 4000fps to 350… and the calorie burn to get 50yds more is really not worth the return on investment… but, for whatever reason I'm hooked on trying to make it happen!
