I've been a composite stock guy for a long time because weight is a big concern to me in my hunting rifles, but I can't shake my strong, likely nostalgic preference for a nice polished high-contrast-grain wood stock. Unfortunately, many wood stocks are quite heavy, and performance-wise it seems wood stocks have been left in the lurch by the new generation of carbon fiber-loving millennial shooters.

So, does anyone know of any high quality, performance oriented wood stocks that are not tanks? 30 oz or lighter, something along those lines. If not, I would also love suggestions for any high-quality, performance wood stocks generally.

Thanks in advance

Ah yes, accuses us millennial shooters who love carbon fiber because it is lighter weight and performs better than wood of leading to the downfall of wood stocks. Then turns around and asks for a wood stock that weighs and performs like carbon fiber. You will find that to be a futile quest for obvious reasons.

There are a couple stocks that come to my mind in the 2.2-2.3lb range.

Woox just announced their Superleggera at shot show:

And GRS has their Hunter Light which I believe you can purchase state side through Eurooptic.

Both brands offer other choices but I think those are the lightest.

Get a composite and have it dipped in a wood grain hydrographic film, they make glossy films too. You'd likely be the only one who knew

Who says that you have to use a wood stock as supplied? I hollowed out a Boyd's Laminated stock to meet my weight target w/o whittling on metal. For a heavy recoiling caliber in a one piece solid wood stock all of what I did would be fine, but further steps to reinforce would likely be desirable.

You have to admit, there IS something about the real thing...

I have wood stock on all my old rifles. My current hunting set up utilizes an HNT26 folder with ARCA, features that are not readily available in a wood stock. I'll be getting a German Gun Stock at some point that is laminated wood with an aluminum mini-chassis. If you love the wood look (what's not to love?), then get a Weatherby or some other heirloom rifle/stock combo. If you hunt from a stand, weight isn't a concern nor is scratching a beautiful chunk of wood. If you hunt in the mountains, then stick with something you can tolerate banging around without bringing you to tears. :) Good luck in your search. BTW, I'm GenX who loves the carbon and could care less who knows it. Hahaha!

Though it doesn't have a lot of character besides the fiddleback, this stock from Boyd's turned out pretty good. I had to refinish it as they gave it a gawd awful coat of orange-ish something or other. The color cast from the overhead light turned the creamy tan back into orange-ish...
Good price for a decent fitting stock on a Mauser and a little elbow grease...
