Just got a can of IMR 4064 to try out w/ my .308 (Savage 10FP LE2, 1 in 10" twist)

The IMR website lists: Starting at 41.5 gr. and max out at 45.6 gr /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif. 45.6 sounds pretty hot! That's a pretty big difference from starting to max. I figure I will start with three loads 43.5 gr. , 44.0 gr. and 44.5 gr.

Any recommendations. Thanks again,
Jim M.

I tried the 4064 in all my rifles and found it to be no better than Varget and the Varget is cleaner and not temp sensitive at all. And with the heavier bullets(175-190) I found 4350 to be a more accurate powder , not quite as fast but more consistant , probably due to compressed loads.
I have been doing some news loads with the VV N-550 powders and it seems to be giving some realy good velocities and very accurate results.

Any particular reason you wanted to shoot the 4064?

Jones,
I've heard from many sources that Varget and IMR 4064 were great in the .308. The Nornady Manual(s) rave about the two powders in this cartridge. Just experimenting with all the known performers.

Ramses, the load depends ALOT on what brass you use. Don't start too high or jump up too fast. IMR4064 has been the most consistent powder I've used in .308 & 7mm08 out to 1,000 yards, but Varget is a close 2nd.

I am using 44 grains of imr 4064,lapua brass, rem. 9 1/2 primer and 175 smk. I have found 4064 to be the most consistent powder in my rifle.

42.2 Gr. of 4064 was very Accurate!! 44.0 Gr. was also very accurate. Thanks for the info!

Mr Bush Man...
My first post. I have been reading and learning.
I have a 700 VL and am trying to learn all I can concerning the best load. I read and then check the manuels.
Most of the loads I see seam to be a little over the books, so please do not hit me for being cautious.
45 for Varget with the 175 MKG sounds like it is the way to go, I also see that the Sierra data stops off at 41.7g for a velocity of 2500,if I go to 45g I am concerned for pressures..I would not load into the lands for fear of over pressure.Wonder what the velocity out the end is if we look at with the combination listed above?
Thank you for being understanding. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
Also, has anyone ever tried the Barnes 165 XLC BT..
I HAVE NEVER USED THE BARNES IN A CENTER FIRE AND NEVER TRIED COATED BULLETS.....
bty, ENJOYED YOUR STATE LAST MONTH ON P.O.W. bear hunting.
Thank you for any advice you can give.
Bob

I shoot 175MK out of a Trued and blueprinted Rem700 with match chamber with a 24" 1-11 twist 5R broughton barrel and 42.2 IMR4064 is the best ive ever gotten, accuracy wise, I have gone through about 7 powders and this one by far is the most accurate. I can sit at the range all day and shoot 100yd 1/4moa or less 5 shot groups. Only stopping every 20 shots to swipe the barrel. stay with 4064 just takes time to find what your rifle likes!!
