Guys let me start off if I can get pics posted I will it may help everyone out but any way down to the dirty cheating.LOL

So I have a custom 6.5 284 rem action Benchmark barrel 26", and gun shoots 1/2 inch at 200 with 53G H 4831sc ,and 140 Berg 40 off lands, and holds 3/4- MOA out to 1000. BUT I was bored ,and another fella on here has the same set up as me ,and he uses Retumbo lights out load for him same barrel ,and action .
So guys heres where I cheated I used his load data 56.5GR of Ret at 5 thou of lands, and I shot a 2inch group at 200 then repeated the same results same group size ( nice triangle group) so being curious I decided to run another test using the seating depth I currently use with my 4831sc load ,and to my surprise I shot two 3 shot groups 1.25 inch thats almost Half min at 200 yards with the same nice triangle group . I know pics would say a thousand words.

So now heres my dilemma seeing as I cheated ,and did not do my own work up on this ,and used someone else's data what do I do continue to seat bullets deeper to see if I can get groups to tighten up a bit or what ?? does anyone have any suggestions as I have yet to run over chrono, and yes I should have done proper work up of my own but I wanted to see if the 2 barrels would shoot close to the same, and I am really pleased so far. I guess I should chrono first to see what I am getting for speed ES ,SD maybe shoot out at longer distance .

Any suggestions or should I just abandon ,and go back to my current load ?

It depends, if it meets your needs keep shooting it. If you're interested in better keep trying different combo's.

I think a good chronograph can provide useful info, about consistency, and verify you're in the ball park with muzzle velocity.

pictures got flipped when I attached all shots should be on left side bottom side of cross inca.se it makes a difference

So the top target is the 5 thou off lands second target pi is the same just with another 3 shop group ,and third picture is of 40 thou off you will see the ones in pen are my first 3 shots I pulled lat shot then waited 10 mins shot the next 3 shot group ,and as you can see 5 thou off ,and 40 thou off produce similar results except the 40 thou off is a much smaller group, and these of course are 1" squares and shots were 200yards.
I think I will load half dozen more ,and run over chrono this week to see where I am at if numbers look good I will continue to seat in more . My H 4831sc load shoots half that size group so I would like this one to as well but its hard when you cheat ,and don't start from scratch as I did with this .

I agree with ME think about barrel life. I have heard that Retumbo may be easier on throats. I have not seen any pressure data to support that though. You really need a good chronograph. See what your extreme spread is and go with the better of the 2.

Good luck and shoot straight

Bob

I've "cheated" with a number of rifles. I usually drop back a couple of grains and work up, but not always when the load is a bit mild to start with.

I have several rifles shooting loads worked up in other rifles:
My 300win using rl22 and 165 hornady... My Dad developed that in a rifle 20 years ago
My second 300rum eats 180 hornady with rl25 and 225 hornady with rl33 that I started using in my first 300rum..
My 7stw shoots the 140 AB with rl25 under it that I started shooting 2 stw's back... all three rifles have liked the same load...
My 270win shoots a couple of loads my brother's 270 shot.
My remmy 30-06 shoots a load using the 165 hornady I developed 20 years ago in a Winchester 30-06
My 338win (ruger#1) shoots the same 225 hornady and rl19 combo my Dad used with his browning 338
That's nearly half of my current rifles using loads I've either developed in other rifles or poached from family shooting the same chamberings...

Thanks for the replies I m gona run over chrono then go from there another 20 rounds will not affect barrel life to much .
